“Neither shall ye profane my holy name; but I will be hallowed among the children of Israel: I am the LORD which hallow you,”
God says, “I will be hallowed among the children of Israel.” God is not a person who we should treat as a trivial possession, but He is the LORD who made the heavens and the earth. God has always demanded that He not be treated as the gods of the world, but to be hallowed, and for those who didn’t hold Him in such respect were to be put out of the congregation of Israel.
The word “hallowed” means to honor or hold sacred. Let me illustrate so that you can understand the meaning of this word. Several years ago, I visited a World War II cemetery in the Philippines. The graves of the brave soldiers were meticulously cared for, and when you walked through those hallowed graves, people walked through in silence and respect of those who gave their lives for our freedoms. Though these people gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms, God has done more for us than these brave men and women who gave their lives for us. God has not only given us everything we have on this earth, but He also gave His Son to die for our sins so that we have the opportunity to go to Heaven if we accept Christ’s payment for our sins.
My friend, a God who would do such things for us should be hallowed. God should be held in such respect that we dare not treat Him or anything or anyplace that represents Him in a casual manner. I am weary with people treating church as if it is a golf club or the beachfront. You should not go to church dressed in a casual manner, because you are going to a place that represents a God who is to be hallowed and held in great respect. When you go to church, you should treat it in such a manner as you would treat God if you were in His presence. Just as the priest of God dressed up to worship God, so we should dress up to go to church. The place of worshipping God as a local church should be sacred, and we should dress as such.
Moreover, we should be very careful not to try and bring God down to man’s level. God is to be hallowed among His people; why would you ever try to bring God down to the level of man when God is sacred and holy? Every time you go to God in prayer, you should be very careful about meeting Him with respect as you pray. Whenever you read His Word, you should shut everything down around you to meet with such a Holy God. When you serve God, you should be careful to serve Him as He would want you to serve Him. The privilege that God gives the believer to serve Him who is to be hallowed should not be taken lightly. You should always attempt to go up to God’s level to serve Him and bring others up to Him because He is to be hallowed.
Furthermore, be careful to use God’s name in a revered manner. God is not the man above, but He is God. God’s name is not a curse word that we speak out of frustration, but His name is to be hallowed and used in such respect that when we speak His Name, others see the respect we have for our holy God. How you address the name of God does show your respect for Him.
Let me ask you, are you treating God in a hallowed manner? You must set God aside in your heart and mind if He is going to be hallowed. Never treat God as a trivial possession, but hallow Him and treat Him as the Holy God.
