A Lamp With Light
Psalm 119:105
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
One of the things that is annoying when I travel is to go to a lamp for light and find out that the light is burnt out. A lamp is purposeless without a light. You can put one hundred lamps in a room without lights, and you will still have darkness in the room and an inability to be able to accomplish what you need to get done. However, put one lamp in a room with a light that works in it, and you will see darkness flee from the room, and you will have the perception to clearly see so that you can get things done.
The familiar verse above says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Several important keywords are used in this verse. The word “lamp” is the first keyword. The “lamp” is God’s Word. In other words, you need God’s Word in your life to give light to your feet and to your path.
The second keyword is “light.” The “light” is Jesus. Jesus said in John 8:12, “…I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” In other words, Jesus is the light that makes God’s Word relevant to the life of the believer. You will never get the guidance you need from God’s Word without Jesus being your Saviour.
The third keyword is “feet.” God is saying that His Word will guide your every step. My friend, one reason you need to read God’s Word daily is so that you can get the light to guide your feet in your daily life. You can walk in darkness throughout your day, or you can let God’s Word give you light to guide your daily life.
The fourth keyword is “path.” God’s Word gives clarity to the direction of life. Many people make foolish decisions because they don’t allow God’s Word to guide their life. In the next few verses, God shows how His Word guides the believer.
First, God’s Word guides the decisions of the believer. God can help you to make “righteous judgments” if you allow His Word to guide and influence every decision. Before you make any major decision, you need to spend time in the Scriptures to get God’s discernment concerning what you should do. God’s Word is a light to give the believer clarity in each decision they make and the impact that these decisions will have on their life.
Second, God’s Word gives life in times of heartache. When trials and afflictions tend to take away hope in life, it is God’s Word that gives hope again. You would be wise to spend much time in the Scriptures when you are going through tough times. You will find hope throughout the pages of God’s Word to give you life to keep going in times of heartache.
Third, God’s Word gives light to make right decisions in times of battle. You are going to face battles in the Christian life, and the only way you will keep from making decisions that can be used against you is by letting God’s Word guide your decisions.
My friend, God’s Word is the light you need to give clarity in life. No matter what you face, when life seems to be dark, God’s Word will lighten the path for you if you allow its words to guide you.
