2 Kings 17:41
“So these nations feared the LORD, and served their graven images, both their children, and their children’s children: as did their fathers, so do they unto this day.”
In this chapter, a sad statement is made several times and that is that these people feared the LORD, but they also served their graven images and lived after the manner of the nations about them. Now how is this that a person could fear the LORD and yet do after the manner of the nations about them? We find the answer in 2 Kings 17:26 where it says, “…The nations which thou hast removed, and placed in the cities of Samaria, know not the manner of the God of the land…” Why did they not know how to serve the LORD? Because nobody had trained them how to serve God. Because they didn’t know how to serve the LORD, they feared Him but served Him the only way they knew how, and that is by how the nations about them served their gods. How sad that none of the priests of the LORD had the courage to train God’s people how to serve God, and that none of the priests trained these nations that feared God how to serve the LORD.
Every nation needs men of God and believers who will train people how to serve the LORD, for if they don’t, these people, though they fear God, will attempt to serve Him in the wrong way. The only reason these people didn’t know how to serve the LORD was because there was a generation who was negligent in teaching the next generation how to serve the LORD. It is your responsibility to teach the next generation the proper way to serve God. Let me share with you a couple of thoughts about not being negligent in your responsibility to teach the next generation the ways of the LORD.
First, the ways of the LORD are one generation away from becoming extinct. All it takes for the next generation not to know how to serve God is for the present generation to be negligent in teaching them. Many children have grown up in homes where parents didn’t do their part in teaching them the ways of the LORD because they were too busy with their careers to get involved in the ways of the LORD. Many young people have grown up in youth departments that were more interested in playing and having fun than they were in teaching them the proper way to serve the LORD. My friend, if you don’t teach the next generation the ways of the LORD, who will?
Second, if you don’t teach the next generation how to serve the LORD, they will learn how to be religious from another source. Most second-generation believers want to be considered spiritual, but if they have not been taught the ways of the LORD, they will copy what the world portrays as spiritual which is nothing short of worldliness. It is not your children’s job to define what they think is spiritual; it is the job of every parent to teach them what is the scriptural way to live.
My friend, one of the reasons you need to be right with the LORD and step up to the standards of your church is so that there are people who can teach the next generation the ways of the LORD in Sunday school. Let me encourage you not to be negligent in your duty to teach the next generation the right way to live. Teach the way of the LORD in your home, and get involved in your church and become a Sunday school teacher so that children will learn the right way to serve Him.
