“She may not eat of any thing that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: all that I commanded her let her observe.”
Samson was chosen by God to be a Nazarite his entire life. Because of this calling, there were several things he could not do. He could not touch dead meat, eat or drink anything of the vine, and he could not cut his hair. These were the requirements God gave for those who were under the Nazarite vow.
However, Samson’s mother was also given strict diet guidelines while Samson was in the womb. God said that she could not “drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing.” It is interesting the God put the same diet requirements on Samson’s mother while he was in her womb as he was to live by his entire life.
God was teaching a principle to every parent that their influence on their child starts in the womb. When my daughter was conceived, my wife and I started reading the Scriptures out loud so that we could influence her mind in the womb. I know to some this may seem strange, but we believed that she could hear what we said even in the womb. If life begins at conception, and it does, then why can’t a child be influenced for good in the womb? Let me give you a couple of observations that every parent needs to consider.
First, don’t wait to start living for the LORD and doing right. If God thought it was important for Samson’s mother to eat right because it influenced her son’s calling, you also should be sure to start living for the LORD and doing right before your child is born. If you are a teenager, start living right and serving the LORD now. If you are a young married person, do right and serve the LORD now; you are setting habits now that you will continue to do when your child is conceived.
Moreover, especially start doing right and serving the LORD when your child is conceived. My friend, don’t think that your child is not being influenced in the womb. If a child can be adversely affected by alcohol and drugs in the womb, they can also be adversely affected by parents who don’t live right while they are in the womb. If you live right while the child is in the womb, you will never have to worry about them having a negative influence before they are born.
Second, your influence on your child’s life is a lifelong. Let me encourage you to never grow indifferent about your actions and their influence on your child. Many parents clean up their lives when their first child is born because of the significance of having a child has on their lives. However, many parents tend to lose the importance of raising children after a while. Never get to the point where you don’t consider how every action is influencing your child. Every word you say, picture you see, song to which you listen, and friend with whom you associate is influencing your child for good or bad. Always remember that you are a constant influence on your child.
Furthermore, you still influence your children when they become adults. Never let up on doing right and serving the LORD. Your actions still influence your children even though they now have their own family.
Let me encourage you to always consider your influence on your children with every action you take. Remember that what you do today your children will most likely do tomorrow.
