“And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.”
Nobody enjoys being tired. I think most people enjoy going to bed at night to get sleep so they can feel refreshed for the next day. There is nothing like going to bed after a long day of work and laying your head on the pillow, and the next thing you know is that it is time to get up. A good nights rest is always invigorating.
However, there are those who, for whatever reason, find it hard to sleep. Doctors often diagnose a person who can’t sleep with insomnia and will sometimes prescribe medication to help them sleep. One reason people have a hard time sleeping is because their mind seems not to be able to rest. This is why there has been much advice given about how to prepare yourself to wind down before going to bed. All of this is to help those who have trouble sleeping.
The verse above shows another reason why people have a hard time sleeping. God says, “…they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.” These people are those who received the mark of the beast during the Great Tribulation. What these people thought would be the sure way to have peace so they could sleep at night became their source of turmoil and insomnia. Their compromise in worshipping the beast and receiving his mark on their forehead is what caused them not to sleep at night.
Christian, compromise always leads to inner turmoil. You can think that living like the world will silence the frustration you have inside, but it won’t. You will never find inner peace by surrendering to the world’s lifestyles and system. Many Christians have thought that adapting to the world would be harmless only to find that the inner voices of guilt became louder. It is interesting how the world that is supposed to be so happy is up for hours at a time because of sin, and then they wonder why they can’t sleep. My friend, you will never find the rest you for which you desire by compromising to the world.
Moreover, living a life of sin also contributes to insomnia. Sin has never given a person a good nights rest. The only thing sin has done for anyone is it has stolen the purity and peace from the innocent and filled them with guilt and restlessness. Don’t think for a moment that surrendering to temptation will give you the satisfaction and peace that sin promises. Surrendering to the one-night stand only causes regret and restlessness. Giving in to one drink of alcohol or one puff of a cigarette or marijuana joint has never given anyone the peace they desire. The only thing sin has done for anyone is it has created a sense of guilt and a desire to commit more sin.
The answer to insomnia caused by sin and compromise is found in Psalm 127:2 where it says, “It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.” Living for the LORD and doing right always silences those voices at night so you can get the needed rest. This devotional is in no way condemning everyone who finds it hard to sleep, but it is a warning to show how sin and compromise is a sure way to become an insomniac. Always do right if you love getting a good nights rest.
