An Effective Witness
1 Thessalonians 1:5
“For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.”
One of the most common questions I get asked from people is how to be an effective soul winner. Nobody wants to go soul winning and never see any fruit of their labors. One of the areas where God has been gracious to me is in my soul winning efforts. Rarely do I come back from soul winning without seeing somebody saved. Not only do I get to see people saved, but the LORD has been good to allow me to see many of my converts come to church and get baptized. I am certainly not the best soul winner, but I do believe the LORD has allowed me to be an effective soul winner.
The question one may ask is how they can be an effective witness for Christ. The verse above shows that Paul was an effective witness. You can read the Pauline epistles and see how he saw many people saved, and many of those who got saved became followers of Christ themselves. The verse above gives five ways that you can become an effective witness that I want to share with you.
First, you can’t be an effective witness without giving the Gospel. Paul had to give the Gospel out if people were going to hear it. You can’t expect people to get saved if you never give them the Gospel. Being an effective witness starts with finding opportunities to give out the Gospel to every person you meet. Handing out tracts is okay, but that is not giving out the Gospel. You must give people the Gospel if they are going to get saved.
Second, you can’t be an effective witness without the power of God. Paul gave out the Gospel through the power of the Holy Ghost. You will fail to be an effective witness if you try to give out the Gospel in your own power. You may be the mouthpiece that proclaims the Gospel, but the Holy Ghost is the mouthpiece who speaks to the heart of the sinner who is hearing the Gospel. You will see many more people saved if you will take time to ask the Holy Ghost to empower you when you go soul winning.
Third, you can’t be an effective witness without confidence. Paul gave out the Gospel “in much assurance.” My friend, you have nothing to be afraid of when you witness for Christ. Stop worrying about if they are getting the message and just give the Gospel with the confidence that the Holy Ghost will explain what you are saying to the individual to whom you are speaking. You will rarely see people get saved if you deliver the Gospel in doubt. Don’t let the naysayers who use their cliches about green fruit and quick prayers cause you to deliver the Gospel in doubt. Be confident in the power of the Gospel and you will see more people get saved.
Fourth, you can’t be an effective witness without a changed life. What made Paul’s witness so effective was that those he witnessed to knew what he was before he got saved. Living like the LORD would have you to live will make your testimony and witness for Christ more powerful to those you are trying to reach with the Gospel.
Fifth, you can’t be an effective witness if you quit in affliction. One of the most powerful tools that causes people to listen is when they see you talk to them about Christ in your affliction. You will find your witness to be more effective if you keep going through whatever trials you have in life.
