“So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.”
One of the greatest reasons that Jesus’ ministry was so successful was because people chose to follow Him. Yes, Jesus aggressively went after the lost, but it was while He was going after the lost that people chose to follow Him. Jesus’ first action in His ministry was to invite people to follow Him, but there came a point that people chose to follow Him without Him having to ask them to follow Him.
The desire of many today is for people to follow them. There are many in social media who like to have a great following of people, but this is a superficial following. You will never make an impact for Christ on the lives of others until you do what it takes for people to follow you. Are you to desire people to follow you because you are someone special? No. In fact, your desire is not that people should follow you, but if you do what Christ did in His life, you will find that you can’t help but have a following of people. Let me point out some things that caused these blind men to follow Christ.
First, Jesus had something that they didn’t have. Jesus had the power to heal them, something that had eluded these two men their entire lives. There has to be a reason for people to follow you. You must have something that they need for them to want to follow you. For people to follow you, you must know something that they don’t know or be able to do something that you can train them to do. Personality will only take you so far, but eventually you have to have something that they don’t have for them to want to follow you. The greatest thing you can have that others will desire is to know God more closely than they do. If you walk with God, you can know more about Christ than others, which will cause them to want to follow you.
Second, Jesus had compassion for their needs. My friend, people don’t care about your problems, but they do want you to care about their problems. I know this may sound heartless, but this is simply a fact of life. People want others to care about them and have compassion for their needs. You will never acquire a following if you make life about you and your comforts. You are going to have to be inconvenienced so that you can care for others if they are going to want to follow you.
Third, Jesus made Himself touchable. People want to touch the people they follow. If you lead from a distance, people will follow from a longer distance. People need to be able to touch the people they are following. As I learned many years ago, learn to walk slowly through the crowd. Jesus literally stood still so that people could touch Him. You cannot hide in an office and expect people to want to follow you. Being touchable is one of the great secrets that causes people to want to follow you, and it will likely set you apart from most people.
Fourth, Jesus touched the lives of those who followed Him. At some point, you must make an impact on those you are trying to help. The key here is that you cannot touch people if you are not touchable. Walking with the crowd and doing something to help them is what will win their heart over to you. Your daily prayers ought to be for God to show you how you can touch those whom He allows you to lead.
