“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,”
The anointing upon Jesus was evident in His ministry. We often say that a person is “anointed” when we see God doing great works through a person’s life or ministry. You never say that someone is anointed when they do nothing. The person that only sits in a pew and does nothing for God is never described as being anointed. The person who has thousands of followers on social media has never been classified as anointed. It is only those who are doing something for God like Jesus did who people will say that they are anointed.
However, the anointing on Jesus was not a possession for inaction, but orders to go do something for the Father. The biggest little word in this verse is the word “to.” In other words, God’s anointing on Jesus’ life was to do something. The anointing was to preach, to recover, and to set at liberty. This verse is teaching that you will never get God’s anointing on your life until you apply this little word to your life.
One of the greatest needs today is for God’s people to be anointed. You will never get God’s anointing when you are trying to find out how you can do the least for God. God’s anointing comes on those who are doing something for Him. It ought to be your passionate desire that God would anoint your life and ministry. To be anointed only comes by having three things right that the word “to” means.
First, your purpose must be right for God’s anointing to rest upon you. Jesus understood His purpose for coming to earth. You will never find God’s anointing until you realize and accept God’s purpose in your life. Too many people are more interested in their own agenda than they are in what they were placed on this earth to do. My friend, God didn’t place you on earth to pursue your agenda, but He created you with every trait and background that you have to accomplish a task for Him. Instead of running for your purpose to be on this earth, you ought to embrace it and want to fulfill it to the extent that God envisioned for your life.
Second, your direction must be right for God’s anointing to rest upon you. You can’t have a direction for the world and see God’s anointing on your life. Stop trying to bring God to your world and start leaving your world to go to His world; it is only then that you will find that God’s anointing will come on your life. If you are demanding that God lives in your world, you will never realize God’s power on you. You must get your direction right before God will ever anoint you to do something great for Him.
Third, your cause must be right for God’s anointing to rest upon you. Let me ask you, what is your cause in life? David had a cause, and there is little doubt that he was anointed of God. Christ lived out His cause to reach the world, and we know that He was anointed with the power of the Holy Spirit. There is no need for God to anoint you with His power and hand upon your life if you have no cause. When your cause equals God’s cause for your life is when God’s anointing will rest upon you.
Do you want God’s anointing? Get busy serving God and you will find that God will anoint you as Christ was anointed.
