Are You Better Than a Horse?

Psalm 32:9
“Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee.”

If you have ever been around a horse, you know that the only way it can be controlled is with a bit and bridle. The horse is wild by nature, and the way to control that wild nature is with a bit and bridle. The whole reason is because the horse has no understanding. The horse has no reasoning; therefore, humans must help them to understand with the bit and bridle.

The horse is a very powerful animal. If the horse understood the power it held, and if it could of its own nature control that power, it would direct that power of its own accord to do much good. Yet, the power of the horse is wasted as long as it is not under control.

My question for you is this, are you better than a horse? Many people waste the power they have because they are uncontrolled. When people don’t control their tongue, they are wasting the power of the tongue to encourage others and to lead them to Jesus Christ. When a person doesn’t control their flesh, they are wasting the power of the body to be used to serve the LORD. Just like the horse and mule, you had better get yourself under control if you are going to harness the power God has placed inside of you for good. Several things will help you do this.

First, it is a lack of understanding that causes you to waste the power to do good. God said that the whole reason a horse or mule must be controlled by bit and bridle is because they “have no understanding.” The only way you are going to get the understanding you need in life is by regularly reading the Scriptures. Only the Scriptures give the understanding you need to do what God placed you on this Earth to do.

Second, you must learn to control yourself. Something needs to control you or heartache and destruction will become the bit and bridle of your life. Many people say, “I just can’t help it.” That is a lie because everyone has the power inside of them to control themselves. When you want to retaliate, you are going to have to control yourself. When you want to respond in a dishonorable or disrespectful manner, you are going to have to control your tongue so that you don’t say what you are not supposed to say. When you want to speak your mind, you are going to have to control yourself so that you don’t hurt the relationships you hold dear. Many relationships have been hurt because of a lack of self-control.

Third, let your bit and bridle be the Holy Spirit of God. You may ask, how do I get myself under control? You get yourself under control by placing yourself under the control of another. Galatians 5:16 says, “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” This verse makes it very clear that if you are under the control of the Holy Spirit that your flesh cannot do what it wants to do. The answer to your control problem is to yield to the Holy Spirit.

I asked you in the title of this devotional, are you better than a horse? The only way you are going to be better than a horse is to yield to the Holy Spirit. When you are yielded to Him, you will be able to use the power inside of you for good and not for destruction. If you will get control of yourself by yielding to the Holy Spirit, you will be better than a horse.
