1 Samuel 11:6
“And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.”
A sad and bothersome story is found in the verse above. The Ammonites had surrounded the city of Jabeshgilead and demanded that all the men come out to have their right eyes thrust out. It is bothersome to me that these men actually considered this proposal. It is bothersome to me because nobody in the city had the fight or the fortitude in them to stand up and say that they would rather die than surrender to these thugs and ruin their future.
However, there was one Spirit-filled man who was bothered. The man who was bothered was Saul. The verse above says that when he heard this report that “his anger was kindled greatly.” It is sad that Saul wasn’t even a part of this city; howbeit, he was bothered that this city was about to lose their future. It was the result of a Spirit-filled man who was bothered by the proposal of these thugs that saved this city from being destroyed.
My question to you is this, are you ever bothered? Is there anything that bothers you enough to put your name and life on the line? We live in times when many are satisfied with the future being destroyed as long as they can enjoy their life and that what is going on doesn’t touch them. My friend, there are many things that should bother you.
Let me ask you, are you bothered that the name of the LORD is defamed? I believe that Saul was bothered because this city was part of the inheritance given to Israel by God. It wasn’t just this city that was at risk, but it was the name of the LORD at risk. It should bother you when people defame the name of the LORD. It should bother you when the LORD’s name is ridiculed or cursed by a society that is trying to push God out of it.
Let me ask you, are you bothered that your country is dying? Saul knew the ramifications of this act. He understood that if this city surrendered, these thugs would continue until the whole country was destroyed. You should be bothered when your country is dying from spiritual decay. It should bother you when you see churches are empty and stadiums are filled on Sunday. I ask you, are you bothered?
Let me ask you, are you bothered that the next generation’s future is at stake? These thugs were going to thrust out the eyes of every male; this included the youth. Do you care that the next generation will never see the works of God like you have seen them if someone doesn’t stand up for the LORD? My friend, the next generation deserves to see the works of God as you have. Someone ought to be bothered when the winds of compromise have caused many to sacrifice the future for the sake of acceptance and ease.
Let me ask you, are you bothered that others are not bothered? I believe Saul was dumbfounded that nobody stood for their city. It should bother you to see the apathetic hearts of Christians who are not bothered that truth is under attack, and that nobody is willing to be inconvenienced for the sake of defending it.
Christian, you may think these things will never touch you, but I can assure you that the Devil is not going to stop at your door. He will continue to destroy until everything is gone, and that includes your church and family. It is time you get bothered and do right so that the future is not destroyed.
