Betimes Praying

Job 8:5
“If thou wouldest seek unto God betimes, and make thy supplication to the Almighty;”

Bildad made a great statement in his response to Job. Though his accusation against Job was false, the principle of what he said was true. He accused Job and his children of sinning against God. He said that if Job would “seek unto God betimes” that God would turn his situation around.

Betimes praying must be a part of every believer’s life. It is betimes praying that changes situations. Sadly, most people pray either in repetition or brevity and are disillusioned because they don’t get their prayers answered. It is betimes praying that will make a difference in your life and situations that you face. Let me explain to you what betimes praying is and how you can apply it to your life.

First, betimes praying is praying early. The word “betimes” carries several definitions and one of those definitions means to pray early in the morning. The Scriptures are very clear about the effectiveness of praying early in the morning. Proverbs 8:17 says, “I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.” If you want God to change your day, you had better seek Him early in the morning. Don’t wait for the day to get going and the circumstances to turn to the worse before you go to Him in prayer. Become a betimes prayer warrior who goes to God early every morning to give your petitions to Him.

Second, betimes praying is praying at the onset of your situation. Many believers wait until they feel there is no hope before they go to God in prayer when you should pray to Him at the inception of your situation. Another definition of the word “betimes” means, “at an early period.” The believer who immediately goes to God when they are first faced with a situation is the believer who finds God intervening at the onset of their problem. Don’t be the type of believer who tries to work things out yourself before you go to God, but make it a habit to immediately ask for God’s help at the beginning of every thing you face.

Third, betimes praying is praying before it is too late. The only reason God didn’t do anything for your situation is because you waited until the damage was already done. Too many believers want God to reverse the damages of situations when He could have prevented them had they prayed for His intervention. Certainly, it is never too late to pray when God is involved because He is able to perform the miraculous; however, don’t wait until the damage has been done to pray for a reversal of the damage, but pray at the onset to ask Him to prevent the damages from happening.

Fourth, betimes praying is praying continually. The word “betimes” also means to keep on praying. Never stop asking the LORD to change your situation. Betimes praying keeps going to the LORD to ask until He comes through.

Fifth, betimes praying begs for God’s intervention. The verse above talks about making “supplication to the Almighty.” To supplicate means to beg in earnest. When is the last time you earnestly begged God to intervene? The situation changing prayer is the earnest prayer that fervently begs God until the answer comes through. When your situation becomes dire is when you will find yourself fervently praying betimes. The believer who has power in prayer is the believer who prays betimes.
