“Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.”
One thing is very evident from the verse above and that is that God wants the believer to be fruitful in their life. God says that He takes away the branch that doesn’t bear fruit, and He purges the branch that does bear fruit. In other words, if you are not bearing fruit in your Christian walk, you are not pleasing the Saviour. However, if you are bearing fruit in your walk with Christ, you will find that He will purge your life so that you can bear more fruit. There are several things you need to keep in mind about the time between bearing fruit and having more fruit.
First, there is time between bearing fruit and bearing more fruit — don’t become impatient. If you are like me, I want to bear more fruit. The desire to bear more fruit can cause many people to become impatient with the fruit-bearing process. We live in a society that wants everything now, but God doesn’t work on the “give me now” mindset. You cannot become so impatient with the process of bearing more fruit that you try to move ahead of God. Many people have tried to get more fruit by changing what brought them fruit because of their impatience, only to find out that it destroyed their ability to bear fruit. Waiting on God in the fruit-bearing process is always worth the wait and trust when He blesses you with more fruit.
Second, there is purging between bearing fruit and bearing more fruit — don’t become discouraged. Many people have become discouraged because of the purging process. God has to purge your life of the things that will hinder or hurt you in the fruit-bearing process so that you can bear more fruit. You must be careful that you don’t get discouraged and quit. It would be sad that you quit in God’s purging process of your life and miss the “more fruit moment” that He had for you.
Third, there is loss between bearing fruit and bearing more fruit — move on. You will lose friends along the way of serving God, but you cannot sit and sulk with their loss. You must move on if you want to get to the point of bearing more fruit. There are many spiritual casualties along the way of serving God, but that doesn’t mean the way was too hard or wrong. Don’t change the way because of the casualties, but keep walking along the way and pray for those who were lost.
So, what do you do while you wait for more fruit? First, stay in God’s Word. You must continue to abide in Christ if you want to see more fruit during this time. God’s Word is what builds you and prepares you for the time of more fruit. Not to stay in God’s Word will rob you of the spiritual nutrients you need to bear more fruit.
Second, abide in Christ and what He wants you to do. Don’t change what brought you fruit. Whatever caused you to have fruit is what will allow you to bear more fruit. The only thing you change is that you do more of what you did to bear more fruit and you will see that God will give you more fruit.
Lastly, pray! Prayer is always the answer to every problem in life. Keep on asking God to give you more fruit and to prepare you for when more fruit comes. Praying and doing what you have always done is the key to God’s purging and to bearing more fruit. Without God you will not bear fruit, and prayer is where God prepares you to bear more fruit.
