Blessed In All Things

post-title

Genesis 24:1 “And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things.”

If I said to you that you are blessed in all things, would you agree with this statement? I know that we say we are blessed, but our disposition and grumbling often don't mirror what we say. If we truly believed that we were blessed, our disposition would match our belief and statement that we are blessed in all things.

The verse above says that Abraham was blessed “in all things.” This is a big statement when you consider all that Abraham endured in his life. Several things this verse is not saying when it says that Abraham was blessed in all things.

First, it does not say that Abraham saw that he was blessed in all things. We don't know how Abraham saw everything in life, but God looked at the whole picture of Abraham’s life and said that he was blessed in all things.

Second, this verse does not say that all things that Abraham endured were good to him. Some things in Abraham’s life were not that good to him, but they were part of the blessings. Though all things that Abraham endured were not good to him, he was still blessed in all things.

Third, this verse does not say that Abraham didn’t have to endure tough times. In fact, Abraham did go through tough times. Abraham faced the heartache of Lot going wayward. He faced the heartbreak of having to send his son Ishmael away. He faced nearly eighty years of not seeing God’s promise fulfilled. Yet, he was blessed in all things despite the tough times he endured.

However, this verse says that Abraham was blessed in all things. So, what does this mean? First, it means that everything he went through brought the blessings. Though he did not understand some of the ingredients of God’s blessings on his life, those ingredients that were distasteful were still part of God blessing all things in his life. Likewise, you may not like everything you face in life, but the tough times you endure are part of the ingredients that make God’s recipe of blessing you in all things.

Second, this means he had to do everything to be blessed. Abraham would not have been blessed had he quit in all the things he endured. God cannot bless all things in your life when you are quick to quit in the tough times. God’s recipe for blessings includes doing all He tells you to do and enduring all He sends you through.

To be blessed in all things reminds me of Romans 8:28 which says, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” At the end of Abraham’s life is when he saw that everything he went through was what brought the blessings. When you look back and see all that has happened in your life, you will realize that God has blessed you in all things IF you have loved Him by serving Him.

My friend, trust God that whatever you face is part of His blessing your life. You may not understand all that you face, but you can't see the ingredients that it takes for God to bless you in all things. Therefore, trust the God who does see the ingredients and you won’t be disappointed at the end of life.
