Bringing Back the Dream

Joel 2:28
“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:”

There used to be a day when it seemed that every young boy had a dream. If you asked the average young boy what he wanted to do when he grew up, you had better sit down for a bit because that boy, with a sparkle in his eye, would tell you what he wanted to do. It just seemed that every boy had a dream to do something big with their life.

I can look back on my childhood and remember some of my dreams. One of those dreams was to preach in some of the largest pulpits in America. There is nothing like serving the LORD and seeing your dreams become a reality. I am truly blessed because I am living the dream.

However, something seems to have taken the dream away. If you asked the average young man today what he wants to do with his life, you would probably hear, “I don’t know.” I’m amazed that not only young boys or teenagers don’t have a dream for their life, but also how many young single men who seem to have no dream. It is truly a sad day when the younger generation has lost their dream.

As is always the case, God’s Word has the answer as to why so many people have lost their dream. The verse above says, “…your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:” Something happened before this statement that shows why so many have lost their dream. Two things are revealed that show why the dream is lost.

First, the dream has been lost because they don’t see the presence of God. Verse 27 says, “And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the LORD your God, and none else…” When God’s presence is seen, you will find that people will begin to dream. When I was a young boy, I went with my father to hear men of God preach. What moved me so deeply was to see the presence of God moving in the hearts of people in these services.

Young people will never get their dream back until they see God’s presence. Too many churches attempt to manufacture God’s presence, but you can never mistake when God’s presence becomes real in a church service. When God’s presence is present, you will see lives changed, and hearts stirred to do something great for the LORD. It is imperative for God’s people to stop trying to manufacture God’s presence and to get alone with God and ask for His presence.

Second, the dream has been lost because there is no power. Verse 28 says, “…I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh…” It stirred my heart as a young man was seeing men who were filled with the Spirit of God. You knew that the touch of God was on their lives because of what He was doing through their ministry. When people see God performing the miraculous through Spirit-filled men of God, it will cause young people to dream of having the same God empower them to see those great works in their life.

Friend, the answer to bringing back the dream is to get alone with the LORD in prayer to beg for His presence and power in your life. The future of a nation is bleak when the youth lose their dream. Christian, you can be a part bringing the dream back if you will do your part by getting God’s presence and power in your life.
