“Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?”
Sometimes, we can get focused on the wrong thing, which causes us to have the wrong reaction. We see people fall into sin, and instead of getting mad at the sin, we get mad at the individual who is in sin. Believers falling into sin will never stop as long as believers are human. Humans are sinners even if they are saved. Just because you got saved doesn’t mean that you won’t sin again; it simply means that your sins have been paid for by Christ.
In the verse above, God pleads with Israel to “cast away” their transgressions. God knew the reason that Israel acted the way they did was because of their sin. He also knew that if they cast away their transgressions that their heart and spirit towards Him would change. Many problems could be resolved in the individual’s life and in the church if we had the same perspective towards sin that God does. Let me point out several observations from this verse that will help you to keep a proper focus on sin.
First, sin is a choice. When God says to “cast away…all your transgressions,” He is saying that you choose to sin. Nobody makes you go into sin. Certainly, people influence you to sin, but ultimately it is your choice whether or not you choose to sin.
Second, quitting sin is also a choice. To “cast away” your transgressions is a choice. Just like you chose to pick up sin, you can also choose to case away sin. Nobody is keeping you from quitting your sin. My friend, you will never overcome sin by staying close to it. If you want to overcome sin, you must cast it as far away from you as possible.
Third, when you cast away sin, you’ll find your heart and spirit will change. According to the Scriptures, the issues of life come from your heart. You will find that what you want to do will change when you get rid of sin. I was talking to a lady in my church who is getting over her addiction to alcohol, and she told me that the friends she used to drink with have asked her multiple times to come to their parties, but she refused. Why did she refuse? She refused because her heart changed when she cast away her sin. You will find your priorities in life will change when you get rid of sin.
Moreover, your spirit towards sin and doing right changes when you cast away your sin. Sin keeps you from wanting to serve God. Sin makes those who are dedicated to serving God look like fanatics. When you cast away sin, your spirit toward the things of God and those who serve Him will change.
Fourth, always remember that sin breaks people. People do bad things because sin has broken them. When sin is gone, the broken people become good people; therefore, get mad at the sin and not at the person who performs the sin. Sin is what causes good people to do bad things. When sin is removed from a broken person’s life, they will become the good person that you know they could be.
My friend, if you will get mad at sin and fight it instead of fighting the person, you’ll find yourself able to help the broken person to get away from the sin that breaks them. Let me encourage you to get focused on fighting sin instead of people. You will help more broken people to become good people by fighting sin instead of the person who sins.
