Character Traits of Christ
“To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:”
When you try to define how someone acts or describe what kind of person they are, you are defining their character traits. In Acts 1:1-3, the character traits of Christ are defined by His disciples. Nobody could tell us what He was like more than those who spent three years with Him everywhere He went. If you are going to be a true Christian, you must embrace and mimic the Christlike character traits as your own. Let me share five character traits of Christ that are revealed in these verses.
The first character trait of Christ is that is a builder. It says in verse 1, “…that Jesus began both to do and teach…” Jesus didn’t just fill His time on this Earth doing nothing, but He established and built the church. Any person desiring to be like Christ will be a person who builds. Building spiritual things takes faith. Faith is the key to becoming a builder. You won’t build a Sunday school class without faith. You won’t build a church without faith. You won’t build a ministry without faith. If you desire to be like Christ, you are going to have to put your faith into action and build something for His glory.
The second character trait of Christ is that He is a teacher. You will notice that Jesus not only began to do, but He also taught His disciples the commandments of the Scriptures. The Christlike life will reproduce itself in others by teaching them what to do. The greatest need in Christianity is for God’s people to continually reproduce in others what Christ has done in them. This is what a fruit-bearing believer will do. Every believer should leave a trail of people they have trained who are walking in the Christian life.
The third character trait of Christ is that He is passionate about what He does. Verse 3 says, “To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion…” The world will never be changed by believers who are apathetic about the things of Christ but passionate about the things of the world. If you are going to change the world in which you live, you must become passionate about serving the LORD. It is not difficult to become passionate about the Christian life if you truly believe it is the best life.
The fourth character trait of Christ is that He is an overcomer. Verse 3 says that He “…shewed himself alive…” Jesus didn’t let death keep Him down; rather, He conquered the obstacle of death by rising again. If you want to be like Christ, you need to stop letting the obstacles of life become an excuse to fail or maintain. If you are going to take on the Christlike trait of being a builder, you will also have to have an overcoming mindset with the obstacles you face.
The fifth character trait of Christ is that He is focused. Verse 3 continues to say about Christ, “…speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:” Jesus never got sidetracked with unimportant things. If you are going to walk the Christian walk successfully, you are going to have to stay focused on what God has called you to do. Don’t let the unimportant replace the important in your life. Stay focused on what God has called you to do as a believer, and that is to reach the lost for Christ. Focus is the key to embracing all the character traits of Christ. If you can stay focused on what you are to do, you will find these traits will also describe you.
