“But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.”
Jesus compelled the disciples to get into the ship and to meet him on the other side of the sea. The disciples, desiring to please the LORD, listened to his prodding and set sail for the other side. In the middle of the night they encountered a storm. The sea tossed their ship because the winds were contrary. The very winds that were supposed to be the driving factor of their ship became the enemy that tried to break their ship and keep them from getting to the other side.
As is always the case, when the disciples were doing all they could to stay alive, Jesus came walking on the water in the fourth watch of the night. The fourth watch was the final watch of the night. In other words, the disciples struggled with the contrary winds for nearly the whole night, and when all hope was almost gone, the answer to the contrary winds came walking on the water. When Peter saw Jesus walking, he asked Him to bid him to walk to Him on the water. Jesus bid Peter to come, and his little faith allowed him the miraculous walk on the water, which culminated in the contrary winds becoming peaceful.
Do you find your life facing contrary winds? Just like the disciples, do you find yourself struggling and not seeing any hope with these winds? My friend, there is hope to the contrary winds of life. Let me give you some observations that can help you with your contrary winds in life.
First, Jesus’ compelling never promises easy sailing. It was Jesus who compelled the disciples to go to the other side, and He knew they would face contrary winds, but His knowledge of the winds didn’t stop Him from compelling them to go to the other side. Just because Jesus compelled you to do something doesn’t mean it is going to be easy. In fact, He already knows what winds you will face when you embark at His bidding to see the miraculous in your life.
Second, you’ll never see victory without contrary winds. When life turns against you, be assured that God will help you to get to the other side. Nobody has ever had easy sailing on the way to victory. All victory comes with contrary winds. You mustn’t give up just because you have encountered contrary winds in your life.
Third, your faith will never grow without contrary winds. Jesus rebuked Peter about allowing doubt to affect his little faith. My friend, it doesn’t take a lot of faith to do the miraculous for the LORD. All you have to do is to act on your faith and not allow doubt to hinder your act of faith as you betray the contrary winds. Always remember that God is growing your faith as you carefully walk on the waters in the contrary winds.
Fourth, don’t give up in the fourth watch of the winds. The disciples had struggled all night before they heard the Saviour’s words, “Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.” Let me assure you that though you can’t see God, God can still see you. You may be in the middle of the fourth watch of your contrary winds, but if you will just keep going, you will see Jesus and the peaceful winds of life come again.
Whatever you do, don’t give up. God is simply using the contrary winds to grow your faith. You will make it to the other side if you will just keep fighting the winds until God comes through.
