“These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men’s persons in admiration because of advantage.”
Very few things will drag your spirit down more than being around complaining people. It was the murmuring of the children of Israel that eventually wore on Moses to the point that he disobeyed God to try to prove a point to the people about their displeasure with God. It was the same murmuring and complaining that brought God to the point to judge these same people because they were never happy with what He gave them. Curing a complaining spirit is important to your enjoyment of life and the spirit of those around you.
Several causes of a complaining spirit are found in this chapter. The first cause is displeasure with what you have; which is the exact cause of murmuring. Not being happy with what you have is a slap in the face of God about His daily provision for you. One of the reasons murmuring and complaining is so distasteful to God is because He gives you what He knows is best, and still complaining is the only thanks He receives.
The second cause of a complaining spirit is living for the now. The verse above says that the people walked “after their own lusts.” Living for the now instead of for eternity will always cause you to be displeased with what you have. When all you do is look at what you have now, you will always see what you don’t have instead of what you do have in eternity.
The third cause of a complaining spirit is looking at what others have. These people kept “men’s persons in admiration.” When you are concerned with what others think about you, you will always find yourself thinking that you don’t have enough. You will never be happy with life or with what you have when you are always looking at what others have that you don’t have.
The fourth cause of a complaining spirit is a lack of Holy Spirit fullness. These people were “sensual,” and were not filled with the Spirit. You won’t be filled with the Spirit when all you are concerned with is gratifying the flesh. A lack of Holy Spirit fullness always causes you to look at yourself instead of doing the cure for complaining.
The first step to curing your complaining spirit is to be enraptured with the love of God. Verse 21 says, “Keep yourselves in the love of God…” When you are enraptured by the love of God, you will find yourself realizing that you have more than you ever deserve. Realizing that God loves someone like you who is undeserving of His love will always cause you to realize that God has been very good to you. Complaining flees from the believer’s mouth when they see how much God has loved them.
The second cure for a complaining spirit is to be a soul winner. Soul winning always helps you to see God’s love for you and for others. Soul winning has a way of putting the joy of the LORD into your life. One of the easiest ways to cure a complaining spirit is to go give the Gospel and to reach the lost for Christ.
The third cure for a complaining spirit is to help others. When your life is about helping others to get the spots of flesh off their life, you will always be satisfied with what the LORD has given you. Living for Christ and others has and will always be the cure for the complaining spirit.
