1 Samuel 17:51
“Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.”
Two groups of people are illustrated in the story of David and Goliath. The first group of people is represented by Saul and Eliab who hid in their tents as Goliath maligned their God. This first group of people were allowing the threats and size of the giant to cause them to hide rather than face him head-on so they could defeat him.
The second group of people is really an individual, and that individual was David. When David heard Goliath curse his God, he didn’t stand idly by in fear of what this giant would do to him, but he faced Goliath and defeated him. It was David’s courage to face his giant that led to the defeat of the Philistine army, and it was the precursor to David’s eventual sitting on the throne of Israel.
Everybody has giants in their life that seem to be like Goliath who intimidate them because of their size and threats to your life. Whether your giant is overwhelming debt, family issues, personal indiscretions in the past, or personal issues you need to overcome, you must face your giant if you want God to use you in a mighty way. Let me give you some advice from this story that will help you to defeat your giants.
First, you will never defeat a giant by hiding from it. As long as Israel hid in their tents, Goliath had the freedom to curse God and belittle them. Your personal problems in life will never be overcome by hiding or running from them. At some point, you need to face your issues if you are going to defeat them. The longer you hide from your problems, the more strength they will gain in your life. The time to face your giants is right now.
Second, it takes courage and faith to face your giants. David wasn’t afraid of Goliath because he looked through the eyes of faith and saw the strength of his God. No matter what your giant is that you face, your God is bigger than your problems. There is no problem in your life that God cannot fix or defeat. My friend, you are going to have to come out of hiding and be courageous enough to face your giants if you are going to defeat them. Yes, it takes faith that God can help you to defeat them, but He has never failed you in the past and He won’t fail you today.
Third, you will never defeat your giants through timid actions. David didn’t tiptoe towards Goliath, but he ran towards him. When you decide to be courageous enough to face your giant, don’t be timid about defeating it. You must go all-in to defeat the giants in your life. It takes the mentality that nothing is going to stop you from defeating the giants you face in your life.
The result of David defeating Goliath caused the army of the Philistines to flee. You will find that the defeat of the giants in your life will help you to win several battles that have hampered you from becoming what God wants you to become. It is time that you become courageous enough to face your giants in faith with a determination to defeat them through God’s help. The giants in your life are the only thing standing between you and God’s purpose for your life. You are missing out on God’s greatest blessings for your life as long as you allow the giants to rule in your life.
