1 Timothy 3:13
“For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.”
One of the keys to success in the Christian life is being bold about your faith. Boldness is not belligerence, but it is having a confidence that causes you not to serve God in fear. Boldness is easily observed. You can tell when a person is fearful or lacks confidence in what they are doing; it comes out in their message. The lack of boldness lessens your message’s impact, and it keeps you from being able to discuss God’s truths with those who need to be saved. It is imperative for God’s people to have “great boldness in the faith.” In this chapter, God shows how you can develop boldness in your faith so that you can better serve God to your greatest capacity.
First, be serious about what you are doing. God said that the deacons must be “grave.” This means they needed to get serious about serving the LORD. You will never be bold about what you do for God if you are not serious about what you are doing. If you are going to be serious about what you are doing, you must believe in what you are doing. When you believe that the Christian life is the best life anyone could live, you will understand its importance and keep it first in your life.
Second, boldness is developed by living right. It’s hard to have a “pure conscience” if you are not living a holy life. You cannot have boldness when you are always looking over your shoulder because you are afraid someone might reveal your past. The best way to develop boldness in your Christian walk is to live such a life that keeps you from being fearful of the revelation of what you have done in the past.
Third, boldness is developed by accomplishment. In verse 10, God says that the deacons must “first be proved.” In other words, they must not be novices, but they must have spiritual accomplishments. Accomplishment is the greatest confidence builder that gives boldness because you know that you can do it again. My friend, you will never have accomplishments if you are not doing anything for God. It is hard to have boldness in your Christian faith if you have never built something or accomplished anything for Christ. Accomplishment doesn’t come without failure. Likewise, accomplishment doesn’t come without the faith to start something or without hard work. Always understand that you can’t develop boldness in your Christian walk if you don’t get involved and do something in your church. Boldness is acquired by having a resume of spiritual accomplishments.
Fourth, “great boldness” is attained by continuing to do what gave you boldness. In other words, don’t try to look for something new, but keep doing what you did to get boldness in the first place. Too many people lose the enamor of the faith and try to find something new when what they need to do is to continue doing what they have always done. The more you accomplish for Christ, the greater your boldness for Christ will become.
My friend, knowing your faith is where boldness is found, but you won’t know your faith if you don’t work it. If you want to get the boldness for Christ, accomplish something. Boldness gives courage, which will result in great works for Christ.
