1 Samuel 17:25
“And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father’s house free in Israel.”
In the story of David and Goliath, a statement in the verse above is often overlooked. The men of Israel said, “Have ye seen this man…” Their statement is a faithless statement. Instead of asking David if he had seen this man, they should have asked him if he had seen their God. The difference between David and these men was that these men saw the giants, but David saw God. David’s response to these men was one of faith because his God was defied. He was not afraid of the size of the man because he knew the power of his God.
My friend, what God does through you will be determined by whether you see giants or God. Many people have looked at the giants of life and feared, and those who looked at men soon found out that their life seemed to be hopeless. What God does through you will be totally dependent on what you see. Let me make several statements about your perception towards circumstances.
First, living by sight always results in a man-focus. If you don’t learn to live by faith, you will always be focused on man and what they can do to you. Many people have felt helpless in their situation of life because they were man-focused instead of God-focused. You must move beyond the faithless life because it will always hold you captive to a man-focus.
Second, a man-focused life always results in fear. Everything you face in life will seem too big to handle when you focus on man. Goliath wasn’t as big as they thought when you compared him to God. Goliath’s strength was limited; whereas, God is omnipotent. Goliath’s knowledge was finite; whereas, God is omniscient. The problem is that if you stay focused on man, you will never see the power of God. Fear and helplessness will always be the result of a man-focus. You are going to have to move on from a man focus if you want to remove fear from your life.
Third, your perception determines your faith. If you are man-focused, you will have little faith. If you are God-focused, you will have boundless faith. It truly comes down to your perception. You can look at the giants and run in fear, or you can look beyond the giants and see God which results in a confidence that nothing is impossible.
Let me ask you, do you see giants or God? If you see God, you will realize the giants are only a bump in the road that God can handle. Genesis 18:14 poses the question, “Is any thing too hard for the LORD?” The answer to this question will be determined by whether you see giants or God. You will say when you are focused on God, “For with God nothing shall be impossible.” (Luke 1:37)
So, at what are you going to focus on? What do you see in your life? Do you see the giants great and tall, or do you see the omnipotent God who can handle every giant in your life? Whatever you are facing today can be handled if you see God. Don’t allow yourself to go another day focused on man. You are hurting yourself and your ability to serve the LORD when you see giants. Let me encourage you to look beyond the giants and see the greatness of God.
