“And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people.”
What an amazing privilege God gave His people when He said, “And I will walk among you…” You would think that the children of Israel would have been inspired everyday with God’s presence; however, something happened to them as you read their history. The awe of God walking among them seemed to quickly disappear. They got so used to His presence among them that they were no longer fearful to turn away from Him or to murmur against Him. They became so comfortable with God’s presence that they were not afraid to disdain the walk with Him. Where most people would look at these people with a bit of jealousy and desire to have the same presence, they got used to God His presence and His walking among them.
Now, before you start criticizing these people for getting used to the presence of God among them, you had better look at your own life and ask yourself if you have gotten used to God’s presence in your life. The same God who promised to be among Israel is the same God who promised never to leave you. In other words, He walks among you just like He walked among the children of Israel.
Do you remember when you first got saved and the awe and excitement you had that God was your Saviour? Do you remember the first time you opened God’s Word and for the first time in your life you actually understood what His Word was saying? Do you remember the first time you knelt to pray and was honored that you even had the privilege to talk directly to God without having to go through any spiritual leader? My friend, that God who you were so in awe of is still the same awesome God today.
One of the greatest battles you will fight in your Christian walk is not getting used to God’s presence in your life. When the believer gets used to the presence of God is when they take Him for granted and see other things that are more inviting than God. How careful you must be that you don’t get used to God’s presence. Let me give you a couple on thoughts of how to avoid getting used to God walking among you.
First, go back to the first time you had God’s presence and remember how exciting and awestruck you were to have His presence in your life. Most of the battle in the Christian walk is in your head. We get used to God’s presence because we forget the first time. One way I keep from getting used to preaching after preaching thousands of times is by going back to the first time and remember how excited I was to preach. This is also how I keep from getting used to reading God’s Word and praying. I go back in my mind and remember the first time, and remembering the first time is what helps me to keep God’s presence exciting.
Second, living your life by faith is what will keep you from getting used to God’s presence in your life. Faith has a way of keeping God and His works exciting in your life. Faith keeps God’s presence fresh and exciting because you need Him to help you as you walk by faith. If God is not with you as you step out by faith, you know that you would quickly fall. When God comes through and honors your faith, you will find the excitement of the first time in your heart. If you have gotten used to God walking among you, step out by faith and you will find His presence among you comforting and exciting.
