1 Kings 11:2
“Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love.”
Solomon opened a door he should have never opened by marrying strange women from other nations. God warned Israel not to “go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods.” However, Solomon thought he was smarter than God, and he thought that he could handle the influences of these women. Verse 4 shows that God knew what He was talking about when it says, “For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods…” Solomon’s pride and self-confidence in his abilities caused him to go after the gods that he should have never gone after.
By allowing these strange women into his life, Solomon opened the door to other gods coming into Israel. Imagine this, the man who was used to build the great temple was the man who opened the door to Ashtoreth, Chemosh, Milcom and Baal, all false gods of other nations. Not only did Solomon open the door for these gods to come into Israel, but he also opened the door for the next generation to go serve these gods. If only Solomon had listened to God and not opened the door to these other nations, Israel would have never strayed from God and the nation would have never been divided.
Sadly, there are many in the Christian world who are like Solomon in that they feel they can listen and read from liberal preachers without opening a door to being influenced by their false theology. You may think that you are strong enough to handle the influences of these people who don’t believe in the old paths, but you are going to find out that God is always right when it comes to slamming the door shut to those who don’t believe like you. You can’t open the door in the slightest to the progressive theology preachers without being pulled into their worldly and unscriptural lifestyles.
Moreover, you can’t open the door to the false teachers of our day without them influencing your children. I know that many believe they can handle these influences, but if you look at their children today, you will see their children have gone the way of the world. You can’t open a door without your children following you through that door. Your children will never see the dangers behind the doors you open.
Furthermore, you will never see the changes in your life from the influence of opening the door to these people. Every time you read their books, listen to their sermons or go to their conferences, their influences are slowly changing you. You may say that you are only opening the door to see what ideas you can glean from them, but by opening the door you are also exposing yourself to their false truth. Satan’s tactic with Eve was to open the door so she could decide “good and evil,” but she went through the door that she thought she would never go through by opening it.
My friend, the best thing you can do to stay right with God is to keep the door shut. If by chance you have opened the door, I implore you to slam the door shut and beg God to purge your mind from the influences that have already affected you. The best way to keep from turning away from God is to keep the door shut on anyone who doesn’t believer according to the Scriptures.
