“Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.”
If I were to ask you what the greatest enemy that keeps God from doing mighty works in your life and church, the answer that many would give would not be the right answer. Many think that Satan working against the church and the believer would be the greatest enemy, but he is not the greatest enemy that keeps God from doing mighty works.
The believer is the one who holds the power to limit God’s ability to do. Psalm 78:41 says, “Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.” Imagine the finite limiting Omnipotence. It is hard to think about how the created limits the Creator. I know there are the Pharisees who say that they are glad that God cannot be limited by man, and that is true to the extent that God is omnipotent, but the Scriptures make it clear that there are some things that keep God from working. The Scriptures show several enemies of God’s power that the believer does that limits God from doing what He would want to do.
First, unbelief is an enemy of God’s power. In Matthew 13:58, it says about the people from the city that Jesus grew up in, “And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.” Sadly, that these people could have seen Jesus do mighty works, but because they didn’t believe Him, He couldn’t do the works He wanted to do. It would be sad that God could not do what He wants to do through your life because you don’t believe that He can do a mighty work through you. To doubt God’s ability to do something mighty through you, or in this day, is to limit God and to doubt His omnipotence. God’s ability to do the miraculous in this day and through your life is not limited to the circumstances of the situation or day, but it will be limited if you don’t believe God and do what you are supposed to do for God to show His power.
Second, fear is the enemy of God’s power. Fear has stopped many people from doing something that enables God to do great works. The fear of failure, or the fear of what others would think, or the fear of the “what if” has stopped many people from attempting great things for God. Your fear of failure and the “what if” is the only thing that stands between you and seeing God do something miraculous.
Third, hardness of heart is an enemy of God’s power. The verse above makes it clear that it was their “hardness of heart” that kept the disciples from believing that Jesus rose from the dead. My friend, a soft heart creates and trusting heart in the omnipotent God and His ability to do anything, including doing the impossible through you.
What is it about these three things that keeps God from showing His power? These three things are all enemies because they are the opposite of faith and trust. It is faith and trust that causes the believer to step out so that God can show His power through them. God has always chosen to show His power through the believer who had the faith to trust that He could do something mighty. Let me ask you, are you allowing the enemies of God’s power to limit His ability to do something mighty in your life? Let me encourage you to trust in God’s power and to step out in faith, for it is through faith that God’s mighty power is displayed.
