“For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.”
The disciples didn’t yet understand that Jesus would not be with them forever. He came for one reason, and that was to die for the sins of mankind. The disciples thought that they would grow old together with Jesus and that they would be able to enjoy the miracles that He performed and listen to the sermons that He preached. What they didn’t understand was that they only had a few days left with the Saviour before He would ascend to Heaven after His resurrection.
In the verse above, Jesus taught the disciples an important lesson that every believer needs to heed. Jesus said, “…but me ye have not always.” They were concerned with the ointment being wasted because it could have been given to the poor, but they lost focus of Who they had in their presence and limited time they would have with Him. Jesus was telling the disciples to enjoy His presence while they had it because it would soon be gone, and they would long for the day to see another miracle, hear another prayer prayed, and listen to another sermon being preached.
My friend, life is fleeting, and what you have won’t always be with you for the rest of your life. If you happen to be in a church that is doing something great for God, you had better enjoy it because it won’t last forever. I am not trying to be a prophet of doom, but God blessings on a church are often because of the man of God who leads that church. While you are seeing souls saved and converts being baptized, you had better enjoy it because one day you will look back and wish you could have another Sunday with the altars filled with people being saved and converts being baptized.
Moreover, you had better enjoy the family you have while you have them because they won’t always be with you. Children enjoy your parents while you have them because one day you will wish that you could call your parents one more time, and you will wish you could give them one more hug. You can get angry with your parents and wish you could prove them wrong, but one day when they are gone, you will desire to have another conversation with them, but you won’t be able to because they are in Heaven. One day the only things you will have left of your parents are the pictures and memories you had with them while they were alive. You had better make the most of the time with your parents while you have them because one day they will be gone.
Furthermore, you had better enjoy the good that you have in life because one day the good will be gone. While you have health, enjoy it and use it for God because one day sickness will grip your body and slow you down from doing what you want to do for God. While the finances are good, enjoy the ability to do things for God because you will one day look back and wish you could give to one more opportunity. While you have your friends with you, enjoy them because they will one day be gone.
My friend, what you have in life will not always be there for you to enjoy, so you had better enjoy every minute of the blessings that God has given to you while you have it. Pictures and memories are wonderful things, but they are never as good as the presence that those pictures and memories represent. Enjoy what you have right now because you won’t always have it with you.
