Luke 4:2 “Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.”
If the Saviour faced temptation in His life on earth, there is no way that you are going to avoid temptation. It is not “if” you will face temptation; it is the question of “when” temptation will come. As a believer, you have the promise of God that He will not allow you to be tempted above that you are able. 1 Corinthians 10:13 says, “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” The fact that God’s Word promised there is a way to escape every temptation means that God has given you the wherewithal to escape it. So, where is temptation’s escape? Jesus shows us some critical keys that it takes to escape temptation.
First, you must not feed your flesh. You will notice in the days that Jesus was tempted that he fasted. When you are trying to overcome temptation, one thing you must not do is feed your flesh. The only way to overcome temptation is to feed on the Spirit and starve the flesh. One of the things that temptation is keying in on is your flesh and its weakness. Therefore, fasting in times when you are trying to overcome flesh’s temptations is one of the key secrets to overcoming temptation.
You cannot feed your flesh and expect to overcome the temptation that is attacking your flesh. The weaker that the flesh becomes, the stronger that the Spirit of God can work in your life. The stronger your flesh becomes, the weaker the influence of the Holy Spirit has in your life. When you are battling temptation, you would be wise to follow the Saviour’s example to spend time fasting and praying. Defeating the flesh as a whole is one of the greatest ways to overcome temptation.
Second, you must be fully yielded to the Holy Ghost to overcome temptation. You are not going to overcome temptation in your own power. The fact that your flesh is battling temptation shows that your flesh is too weak to overcome temptation in its own power. However, the believer has a power inside of them Who is more powerful than any temptation that the flesh will face, and that power is the Holy Ghost. Yielding to the Holy Ghost is more powerful than the temptation of alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, vice, or any fleshly temptation. The believer must constantly yield to the Holy Ghost several times every day if they want total victory over flesh’s temptations.
Third, one victory doesn't guarantee continued victory. The battle to overcome temptation will be a lifetime battle. Verse 13 says, “And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.” You will notice that Satan planned on coming back to tempt the Saviour, and He did. In order to defeat flesh’s temptation, you must continually starve your flesh and feed the Spirit so that when the day of temptation comes again, you are so yielded to the Holy Ghost that flesh’s temptation has no lure to your flesh. My friend, you can overcome temptation every time. You don't have to lose to temptation, but you must always be on guard that Satan may have left you for a season, but he will return at the most unexpected times. Always be on guard to temptation by being yielded to the Holy Ghost.
