“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
A lot has been made about how essential church is, and rightfully so. Church is essential even if ignorant politicians who are self-absorbed and filled with arrogance and pride think it is unessential. Church is essential because God says that it is essential. Church doesn’t need the validation of politicians or mankind to dictate that it is essential because it was deemed essential by Jesus Christ.
The verse above teaches that church is essential. God says, “…they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” The word “must” means essential. God is teaching that essential worship is to worship God “in spirit and in truth.” Maybe the reason society and politicians have deemed church unessential is because they have not seen God’s people worship Him “in spirit and in truth.” If you are going to worship God the way He wants to be worshipped, you must worship Him “in spirit and in truth.” Let me explain what this verse is teaching.
First, God commands to be worshipped. Worshipping God is more than just going to church, but worshipping God is doing right and serving Him. Every time you do right, you are worshipping God. Every time you do something of service for God, you are worshipping God. In other words, when you teach a Sunday school class, run a bus route, go soul winning, or serve in the church, you are worshipping God. Don’t mistake worship for just having an emotional feeling in church services, but understand that worshipping God has more to do with doing right and serving Him than it does with having a church service. To go to church and not to do right or serve God is simply not worshipping God.
Second, God wants to be worshipped in spirit. To worship God in spirit carries many meanings. It means that when you serve God, He desires that you serve Him with the right disposition and the right attitude. The “I have to do this” so that you can punch your spiritual clock to fulfill your religious obligation for the week is not going to please God. God wants you to be passionate and for your emotions and heart to be involved as you serve Him. When you worship God in spirit, you will do His work with a standard of excellence.
Third, God wants to be worshipped in truth. To worship God in truth means to serve Him because it’s right. There are times when your spirit is not what it should be, but you are to still serve God because it is right. Worshipping God in spirit means to serve Him because you have an obligation to serve Him; it means to serve Him out of duty. I know this doesn’t sound spiritual, but God says to serve Him in truth. Psalm 33:4 says, “…and all his works are done in truth.” God wants you to do right and to serve Him even if you do it because it is your duty.
My friend, you won’t do right all the time because it feels good. There are going to be times when you have to do right because it is your duty and the right thing to do. You will find out that when you do it out of duty, the passion often comes because you obeyed. The heart of how God wants you to do right will come if you just do it out of obligation and duty. Don’t wait to do right until you want or feel like doing right, but do right because you are supposed to do right. You will find that as you do right in duty, the desire and passion for doing right will come.
