“The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out.”
God instructed Moses that the fire on the altar of the burnt offering must “ever be burning.” There were several reasons for this fire to ever burn. One of the reasons was that God wanted people to know that at any time they can accept Christ as their Saviour. Another reason that God wanted the fire to always burn was because He wanted to keep a reminder in the heart of His children of the importance of keeping the fires of God burning in their heart continually.
As a young man, I had a burning desire within my heart for God to use me mightily. There was a fire that burned in my heart for people to be saved, their lives to be changed, and for God to do something great through my life so that His name and power could be seen in the generations to come through my life. As I write this devotional, I am fifty-one years of age. Though I may not have the energy I once used to have as a teenage young man, the fire within my heart is hotter today than it has ever been. The fire burning within my heart for souls to be saved is hotter today than it has ever been in my life. The desire for God to use me mightily in His service is greater today than it was when I was a teenage young man. The fire of God has ever been burning in my heart from a teenage boy to the present.
One of the greatest needs today is for people to have a fire burning within their heart. I understand that Satan uses situations in life to try to dampen the fire that burns within the heart of the believer, but you must never let anything quench the fire of God in your heart. The fire of God should ever be burning in your soul for God. Let me remind you of three areas where the fire needs to ever be burning.
First, the fire for the hatred of sin needs to ever burn. The more you work with people, the more easily it is to keep the hatred for sin burning in your heart. It is not hard to keep a fire burning in your heart to hate sin when you see what sin does to the lives of people. Moreover, there should be a burning fire in your heart to keep sin out of your life. What you enjoy doing for God will quickly vanish if you let sin into your life. Many people who were once used by God let the fire go out, and they succumbed to the cold and indifferent life that sin causes. Never lose the hatred for sin in your personal life and in the lives of others. Let the fire for the hatred of sin ever burn within your heart.
Second, the fire for reaching the lost should ever be burning within your heart. It is not hard to keep the fire burning in your heart for the lost when you are among the multitudes. Many people who once used to be avid soul winners let outside activities quench their fire to reach the lost for Christ. My friend, as long as the fires of Hell still burn, the fire within your heart should ever burn to reach people before they slip out in a Christ-less Hell.
Third, the fire for God to use you should ever be burning. Never lose the fire for God to use you in your life. Never let the criticism of the Pharisees dampen the fire in your heart for God to do something great through your life. Get a fire in your heart to do something great for God.
Let me ask you; is the fire still burning in your heart? The fire of God should get hotter in your heart the longer you live. Anything in your life that would quench the fire from burning should be removed at once.
