2 Chronicles 15:2
“And he went out to meet Asa, and said unto him, Hear ye me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin; The LORD is with you, while ye be with him; and if ye seek him, he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him, he will forsake you.”
Three statements are made in the verse above that reveal how easy it is to get close to God. The prophet said to Asa, “The LORD is with you, while ye be with him…” It is interesting that God’s presence was not something conjured up, but His presence was dependent on them staying with God. As long as Israel stayed with the LORD, the LORD stayed with them. There is no secret to having the LORD’s presence in your life other than you choosing to stay with the LORD.
Moreover, the prophet continued to say, “…and if ye seek him, he will be found of you…” In other words, if you stray, God is easy to be found. You find God by simply seeking Him. God’s presence is only as far as your prayer life. The more you seek the LORD in prayer, the more you will find Him in your life. There is no secret to finding the LORD other than spending time with Him in prayer.
Furthermore, the prophet finished by saying, “…but if ye forsake him, he will forsake you.” The only way you can lose God’s presence in your life is to purposely leave God. To forsake God is a powerful choice. God is saying when you choose to abandon Him, He will also forsake you. There are three observations about this verse I would like to show you.
First, your proximity to God reveals your direction. The only reason God happens not to be near a person is because they chose to go a different direction. James 4:8 says, “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” The only reason you cannot find God’s presence is because your direction has changed. As long as you face God, He will continue to come towards you. The direction you are headed in life does matter with your relationship with the LORD. If you are faced towards the world, you are going to find that God’s presence will not be near. You show me what direction you are headed in life and I will show you how near you are to God.
Second, closeness to God is not dependent on a feeling. There are Christians who often say that they felt the presence of the LORD in their church services because of the music being played. However, why is it that those same people never find the same feeling of His presence in the workplace or in their home? The reason they don’t find God’s presence is because His presence is not dependent upon a feeling. I’m afraid what many have equated as the presence of God is nothing more than the result of music playing on their emotions. Certainly, music can play a part in preparing our heart to seek the LORD, but music doesn’t bring people closer to the LORD.
Third, getting close to God depends upon how much you seek and draw near to Him. If you want to get close to the LORD, you must start drawing near to Him. The secret to getting being near the LORD is drawing closer to Him by forsaking sin, soul winning, praying, studying the Word of God, and serving Him. Christian, if you truly want to be close to the LORD and find His presence near you, all you have to do is continually takes steps towards Him. You will find that God will draw closer to you with every step you take towards Him. Let me ask you, when is the last time you took a step closer to the LORD. If God doesn’t feel close to you, it is simply because you haven’t taken a step to get closer to Him.
