“Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.”
One of the greatest needs of every church is laborers to help reach their harvest. I live in a city of 1.3 million souls, and every soul needs the Gospel. There are times when you think about how many souls are around you that it can almost be overwhelming, but the harvest can be reached if we can find the laborers who will get into the harvest. In Luke 10:2-12, Jesus tells us how to find laborers.
First, realize the immensity and urgency of the harvest. Jesus said that the harvest “is great.” The word “great” is the same word we would use when we say that the lady is “great with child.” In other words, she is about to have a child at any time. Always remember that the problem is not the harvest, but the problem is finding laborers. The harvest is great, and the urgency to reach it gets greater as every minute passes.
Second, pray for laborers. It is interesting that Jesus didn’t tell the disciples to pray for souls to get saved, but He commanded them to pray that He would send forth laborers into the harvest. There are potential laborers for your church, but you must pray that God leads you to those whom you can lead to Christ so that they also can become a laborer in the harvest.
Third, go and work the harvest. Jesus says in verse 3, “Go your ways…” It is difficult to see people saved when you don’t go and give the Gospel. The lost will never get saved as long as you sit at home and talk about the need of people getting saved. The lost will only get saved when you go and give them the Gospel.
Fourth, leave worldly cares behind. You must focus on the harvest when you go soul winning, and the only way you will accomplish this is by leaving your worldly cares behind. This is what Jesus meant when He told the disciples to carry “neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes.”
Fifth, create a dialogue with the lost. Let me encourage you to develop your communication skills. It is much easier to reach someone for Christ when you have spent some time getting to know them before you pop the question about their salvation. Jesus told the disciples to enter into the homes that invited them in because He was teaching them the importance of having dialogue with them before presenting the Gospel to them.
Sixth, give the Gospel. People cannot get saved without hearing the Gospel. Leaving a person without ever giving the Gospel will not result in finding laborers. Don’t be afraid to give the Gospel. You will find out that more people want to get saved than you realized because the harvest is great.
Seventh, don’t waste your time on those who are not interested. One of the greatest mistakes you can make is wasting your time trying to convince someone to get saved. My friend, if they are not ready to get saved, move on to the next person. In verse 10, Jesus told the disciples to go their ways if a house didn’t receive them. Nothing will be achieved by arguing with someone who doesn’t want to be saved.
Eighth, go again. When you have given the Gospel to one person, go and find another one. The secret to finding laborers is by continually going to reach the harvest.
