Follow Not

3 John 1:11 “Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.”

Everyone is following someone, but everyone doesn't always follow the right one. According to the verse above, you are following either good or evil. Now, whichever you follow will determine your viewpoint of God. You cannot follow evil and see the good in God and what He has done in your life. Likewise, you cannot follow good and see God as evil.

Whether or not we like it, God does command us to “follow not” certain people. Understand that good and evil are done by people; therefore, there are people which we should not follow, and there are people which we should follow. When God commands us to “follow not,” that means there are some people we should not follow. Let me point out those who we should not follow because they are evil.

First, don't follow those who are evil in the digital world. There are some who are out to destroy people and the old paths; you should not follow these. I am always amazed how the enemy follows me on social media. They seem to be the ones who think it is their calling in life to correct what they deem is wrong. I determined a long time ago that I would not follow someone with whom I disagreed. You cannot follow evil and it not affect your spirit or thinking. If you love truth, you cannot follow evil without it affecting your spirit. If you are going to be who God needs you to be in spirit and live according to how He commands you to live, you cannot follow those who are evil in the digital world.

Second, follow not those who would destroy your spirit. Proverbs 18:14 says, “The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?” You cannot follow that which is negative and expect to have an encouraging spirit to help others in their time of need. You cannot watch the news media and be on topside in life. The news media will wound your spirit; therefore, you would be wise not to follow the news. You will find yourself being negative in life if you continually follow the news. Also, conspiracy theory activists will destroy your spirit; don't follow them. You cannot live in a conspiracy theory world and be positive for those who need to be encouraged. I don't follow conspiracy propaganda because I know the One (Jesus Christ) who holds and is in my tomorrow. You cannot be who you need to be if you follow those who destroy your spirit.

Third, follow not those who believe and practice false doctrine. It is evil to preach and teach false doctrine. 2 Thessalonians 3:6 commands, “Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.” Just because someone is saved doesn't mean you should follow them. If someone doesn’t believe the faith as you have been taught, have nothing to do with them.

Fourth, follow not those who destroy other believers. There are some who think it is their job to “clean up” a movement, but the only evil they are doing is gossiping. Gossip is just as wrong as the sin the gossip is supposedly trying “cleaning up.” Don’t follow those who think it is their job to clean up something because it is not their job; they are peddling their evil for a following. You will become evil yourself if you follow evil.
