“That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;”
Everything leaves a footprint. No matter where you have been, there is a footprint of your presence in that place. This can be bad for those who have been in places where they should not have been, but it is good for those who are doing things they should be doing. The verse above talks about shining “as lights in the world;” This simply means that the footprint the believer leaves in every place should be a footprint of light. There are several actions that make up footprints of light.
Obedience is the first footprint of light. In verse 12, Paul talks to the believers about their obedience, not only in his presence, but even when he was gone. The best way you can leave a footprint of light is to be obedient to God’s Word all the time. Don’t let the only time you are obedient to God’s Word be when you are at church, but be obedient to God wherever you go.
Working your salvation is the second footprint of light. This does not mean that works is a part of salvation, but it is talking about growing in grace. The believer who wants to leave a footprint of light must be the believer who is constantly growing in the LORD. The quickest way to quench your light for the LORD is to stop growing in grace. One reason you need to have a daily walk in the Scriptures is so that you can grow in grace and leave a footprint of light wherever you go.
Having a good attitude is the third footprint of light. God commands us to do all things without “murmurings and disputings:” You will never leave a footprint of light by complaining. The world needs to see that walking in the light is a joyous walk. Never let the negative of the world influence your spirit; rather, let your spirit influence your world as you walk in the light.
Witnessing for Christ is the fourth footprint of light. Verse 16 talks about “Holding forth the word of life.” The best way to leave a footprint of light everywhere you go is to witness to the lost in every place. Don’t let the only time you witness be at a church organized soul-winning time, but be a witness all the time.
Living a righteous life is the fifth footprint of light. The verse above says, “That ye may be blameless…” My friend, live your life in such a manner that nobody can ever accuse you of leaving a footprint of darkness. Instead, live your life that the only thing people can accuse you of is doing right and leaving footprints of light.
Self-sacrifice is the sixth footprint of light. Verse 17 talks about being “offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith.” You will never leave footprints of light without being a living sacrifice. You cannot leave footprints of light and live a selfish life. Those who sacrifice selfish desires will find that the footprints of light are in every place they have been.
Rejoicing with others is the seventh footprint of light. In verse 18, Paul talks about rejoicing with him. Don’t be so selfish that the only things you get excited about are the things that happen to you. You can leave a footprint of light in another’s world if you rejoice with them when they are blessed.
