“For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name’s sake lead me, and guide me.”
Throughout the Scriptures, God shows the value of His name. In 1 Samuel 12:22, the LORD did not forsake his people for His name’s sake. In Psalm 23:3, the LORD leads us in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. In Psalm 25:11, the LORD pardons our iniquities for His name’s sake. In Psalm 31:3, the LORD guides the believer for His name’s sake. In Psalm 106:8, the LORD delivers His people from bondage for His name’s sake. These are just a few things that God does for the believer for His name’s sake. In fact, thirty times in the Scriptures, God performed an action for His name’s sake.
The name of God is not just any name, but His name is above every name. Philippians 2:9 says, “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:” The children of Israel so revered the name of God that they were forbidden even to pronounce His full name. My friend, God takes His name seriously, and expects the believer to have the right perspective towards His name. There are a couple of lessons that the believer can apply to their lives to help them keep His name in proper perspective.
First, be careful with what you say about God’s name. Exodus 20:7 says, “Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.” I’m afraid too many believers are very careless in how they speak about God. Sadly, many believers are guilty of using God’s name in vain, and the saddest part is that it doesn’t even bother them. When I was a boy, my parents never allowed me to even use the “G” words that were nothing more than cursing. God’s name is not a curse word, but His name is above every name and should be revered and honored as such. It should bother you when God’s name is taken in vain, and you should be willing to turn off programs that use His name as a curse word, and ask others to stop using your Saviour’s name as they curse. It is sad that many believers are more concerned when someone talks bad about them, but they are never fazed when people take God’s name in vain. Taking God’s name in vain has never stopped being a sin.
Second, it is not about you. Everything in life should be about the LORD. God does many things for the believer for His name’s sake. One of the greatest indicators of a believer backsliding is when they make light of God’s name and make everything about themselves. Everything you do in life should be for His name’s sake. You should not live for yourself, but you should live for His name’s sake. You should not make decisions based on how it benefits you, but you should make decisions based on what it will do to God’s name. You will find that God will bless you when you start realizing that it is not about you, but it is about His name.
Third, when you remember Who it is about is when you will find the help you need for life. You will find that God helped many people in the Scriptures when His name was at stake. God delivered Israel from Egypt and the wilderness for His name’s sake, and He will help you in your time of need for His name’s sake if you will live for His name being glorified. Let me encourage you to stop making life about yourself, and realize that everything you do in the Christian walk should be done for His name’s sake.
