“He that dasheth in pieces is come up before thy face: keep the munition, watch the way, make thy loins strong, fortify thy power mightily.”
One of the mistakes many Christians make is that they get comfortable in the area of their strength not realizing that Satan is a master at defeating them through their strength. Many Christians focus on strengthening their weakness, and they should, but they ignore their strength because they feel secure in their strength. It is often in the area where a person is strong where Satan tends to get them to fall.
God told Nineveh in the verse above to “fortify thy power mightily.” Nineveh was about to face the judgment of God, and He was warning them that their strength was not strong enough to hold Him back from destroying them. Though their walls were so high that no enemy seemed to be able to overcome them, they never thought about the strength of the LORD being able to destroy those walls. The walls around the city were the strength of the city, and their confidence in their walls became their eventual downfall. Though this verse is a warning to Nineveh of the coming judgment of God, it should also be a warning to every Christian to fortify the area of their spiritual strength. Three things can be learned from this phrase.
First, confidence in your strength is a great weakness. Many become so prideful about their strength that it becomes their source of weakness. Your confidence should only be placed in the LORD. Whenever you place your confidence in anything or anyone else, that confidence becomes the source of weakness. Many preachers have become confident in their ability to preach that they stopped begging for God’s power to give them power to preach. Many Christians have become confident in their personal abilities that they stopped asking God for help in the area where they feel strong. When you feel you no longer need God’s help in a certain area is when you desperately need His help in that area.
Second, your strength must be strengthened to stay strong. The only way to keep an area of your life strong is to continue strengthening it. It would be like a weightlifter working hard to build his strength, but once he became strong, he stopped lifting weights because he feels he will always be strong. The only way the weightlifter can keep the strength he has is to continue lifting weights to strengthen his strength. Likewise, whatever made you strong in an area must be continued to keep that area strong. My friend, don’t think for a minute that your strength will stay strong if you don’t work on strengthening it. The strength of an individual stays strong by the continued work to keep that area strong.
Third, don’t ignore your strength to build your weakness. My final warning to you is not to ignore your strength’s so that you can build your weaknesses. Certainly, your weaknesses need to be built, but you must never ignore strengthening and guarding your strength just to focus on your weakness. The great thing that protects you in your area of weakness is that you are extra careful in that area because you know you are weak; whereas, you are not as careful to protect the area of your strength because you think you are strong enough to handle anything in that area. Christian, be extra careful to guard your weakness, but don’t forget to guard your area of strength because it must still be guarded. Your strength will stay strong if you guard it and strengthen it like you do your weakness.
