“Then said I, Ah Lord GOD! behold, my soul hath not been polluted: for from my youth up even till now have I not eaten of that which dieth of itself, or is torn in pieces; neither came there abominable flesh into my mouth.”
Ezekiel made the statement, “…from my youth up…” It is clear from this statement that he did not wait until he was an adult to serve the LORD and do right, but he started in his youth. No doubt, it was the life he lived from a youth that allowed the LORD to use him in the manner in which he was used.
There is something about a youth who chooses to serve the LORD that opens the door for God to do greater works through their life. It is not that God can’t use someone when they come to Him as an adult, but it is simply the fact that God can do His works longer through an individual’s life if they will give their life to Him as a youth. Several observations can be observed from this statement that Ezekiel made that should help every person reading this devotional.
First, don’t wait to serve the LORD. You may say, “Bro. Domelle, when is the best time to start serving the LORD?” My answer to you is, now! No matter what stage of life you may be in, God wants to use you immediately. Never wait until a later time in your life to serve the LORD. The youth needs to start serving the LORD at their young age. Sadly, some think that the youth are too young to get involved in church activities, but God makes it clear through the life of Timothy that even a youth can serve in the church. You must always remember that every day you waste not serving the LORD is a day you cannot redo. Now is the time to start serving Him.
Second, the life of your youth gives you credibility in your youth. It was the life that Ezekiel lived as a youth that gave him credibility in his youth as a prophet. If you start serving the LORD as a young adult, the one thing that will give you credibility is that you started when you were young. I started in evangelism when I was twenty-one years of age. The one thing that gave my ministry credibility was that people knew I became heavily involved in the ministry as a young teenage boy. Teenager, you are going to need something as credibility when you start your adult ministry. The only thing that will give you credibility is that you served God from your youth.
Third, every youth should be on an upward growth pattern. Ezekiel said, “…from my youth up…” Just because you are a youth doesn’t give you an excuse to do the same things over continually. You should have a maturing direction in your Christian life. Using your youth as an excuse to do wrong only hurts the ability for God to use those years to further His work through your life. My friend, make your growth pattern in the Christian life an upward pattern. Don’t allow yourself to be on a downward pattern or a plateau pattern. The only direction that God desires is an upward pattern.
Finally, no adult has an excuse to stop serving the LORD. Ezekiel said, “…from my youth up even till now…” In other words, he continued to serve the LORD when he became an adult. It is sad when the youth do more work in the church than the adults. As an adult, you need to be the example to the youth of how to continue to serve the LORD. Age is never an excuse to compromise and quit serving the LORD. God desires that both the youth and the aged serve Him together.
