From Whence Comest Thou?
“And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.”
Two times the LORD asked Satan, “From whence comest thou?” I don’t believe the LORD was asking him because He didn’t know where Satan had been or was coming from, but I believe He asked him so that He could show to the believer the hateful and destructive desires of Satan.
Satan’s answer to the LORD’s question was, “From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.” Was Satan just taking a stroll through the Earth? Absolutely not! Did Satan not have anything to do? No! Satan had a purpose for “going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.” His purpose is found in 1 Peter 5:8 which says, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” Satan was patrolling the Earth to see whom he could destroy. He was “walking up and down in it” to see whom he could “devour.” This is seen in his answer to the LORD when he said in Job 2:4-5, “…Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.” Satan’s whole purpose was not to make life better for Job or anyone else, but his purpose was to destroy.
The believer would be wise to learn from these verses that Satan is out to destroy every person, but especially the believer. Satan is always seeking an opportunity to make havoc in your life. He is always seeking an opportunity to devour and destroy you. He watches you more and knows you more than you know yourself. Satan’s purposes and actions should cause the believer to consider a few things.
First, every offer Satan gives the believer always has the purpose to devour and to destroy them. It doesn’t matter how great Satan’s offer is, it is always to destroy them. You may recall how Satan offered Judas Iscariot thirty pieces of silver, but you must not forget where the thirty pieces of silver that Satan offered ended up for Judas; it ended up with him committing suicide. Satan is a master of cloaking his death offers with great life opportunities that quickly diminish once you accept them. My friend, Satan is a deceiver by nature; therefore, you must never believe anything he promises.
Second, Satan is at war with every believer. Don’t mistake the fact that you are at war with the Devil. He may act like he has come to peace with what you are doing, but he is a liar and is out to destroy your life. You will find it much easier to refuse Satan’s offers if you will remember that you are at war with him. Why would you accept any offer from the enemy? My friend, the enemy, which is Satan, wants to destroy you. Don’t accept any offer he gives because every offer always has death inside of it.
Third, be careful with every decision and step you take because Satan is always around the corner to pounce on any misstep you make. All it takes for Satan to destroy you is one weak moment and one bad decision. Nobody is above this principle, and this includes you. My friend, all you have to do is look at all the spiritual corpses Satan has left behind and you will realize he is serious about his work. Take the warning of the Scriptures to be sober and vigilant with everything you do so that you don’t become Satan’s next victim.
