God’s Great Desire
Ezekiel 7:9
“And mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity: I will recompense thee according to thy ways and thine abominations that are in the midst of thee; and ye shall know that I am the LORD that smiteth.”
One of the great desires of the LORD is for His people to know Him. Thirty-one times in the book of Ezekiel God says, “…ye shall know that I am the LORD…” Apparently, it is important to God to be known and to be recognized as the LORD. God is saying several things with this statement.
First, He is saying that He wants to be the LORD. In other words, He doesn’t want anyone or anything else to be lord of your life. God craves to be first place in your heart and life. He wants to be the LORD of all that you do. In other words, He wants to be the master, the greatest influence, and the One who is in charge of your life. God is never pleased with any other position in your life other than being the LORD of your life.
Second, He is saying that He wants to be known as the LORD. The name “LORD” is the name used for Jehovah. In other words, God wants you to know that He is all-powerful. To know the LORD is wonderful, but to know that He is all-powerful and that He has the ability to help you with any situation in life is the greatest knowledge and comfort that the believer can obtain. When you know God as Jehovah, you will never find anything or anyone to whom you would rather put your trust in other than the LORD.
Third, He is saying that He wants you to know that He is the LORD of the present. God doesn’t just want to be the LORD of your past, but also of your present. He says in the verse above, “I am the LORD.” The word “am” is key because God is saying that He was not just in your past, but He is very present to help you today. God is desirous of you recognizing that He is still able to help you today and that He has not lost any power from yesterday.
So, how do you get to know God as the LORD? First, you get to know Him as the LORD through His Word. One reason you must read the Scriptures daily is so that you can be reminded of His power in your life. The Scriptures will daily remind you of His power and ability to help you with your every problem.
Second, you get to know God as the LORD through faith experiences. The more you step out and live by faith, the more you will recognize that God is the LORD. Faith actions reveal the power of God to the believer. A believer who never attempts anything by faith will never know the power the LORD has for their life. Faith reveals the LORD’s power because it takes the LORD to make it through faith actions.
Third, you get to know God as the LORD through trial experiences. Trials have a way of getting you to look up to the LORD. You will get to know the LORD more intimately when you go through the greatest trials of your life.
Fourth, you get to know God as the LORD through punishment. Oh, this is not how the LORD wants to be known as the LORD in your life. He would rather reveal His power to you through other areas, but if you won’t let Him be the LORD of your life, He will punish you and bring you to the point where you look up and recognize Him as LORD to help you out of your mess. Don’t let this be the way you get to know the LORD as the LORD.
