Great Things
Joel 2:21
“Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for the LORD will do great things.”
What every generation needs are people who will let God do great things for them. We live in times when most people think of the great works of God as mere stories because they have never seen God do great works in their lifetime. The great works of God are only one generation away from becoming stories instead of life experiences because of a lack of seeing them in the present generation. God’s great works are not just for the past generation, but His great works are for every generation. The great works of God must become multi-generational experiences if we are to pass the old paths on to the next generation.
In the verse above, God says that the “LORD will do great things.” God was showing to Israel what He could do if they would return to Him. God desperately wanted to show Israel what great things He could do for them, but it took Israel returning to God for those great things to happen. These great things that God wanted to do for Israel are the same great things He wants to do for you if you will allow Him to do them through your life. There are four great things that God wants to do in the life of every believer.
First, God will restore when He does great things. Verse 25 says that God will restore what sin had taken. When God does great works through an individual’s life, He restores what sin has ravaged. The great works of God restores the blessings and fellowship that a believer once had before sin ruined their life. There is nothing that sin has taken that the power of God can’t restore if the believer will allow God to do great things through their life. Never let the shame of sin keep God from restoring His blessing of being reused again.
Second, God gives fellowship when He does great things. In verse 27, God said that He would be “in the midst of Israel.” One of the great things that this generation needs to see is that God is with His people. Not only does every generation need to see that God can restore the fallen, but they also need to see that God’s presence is with His people. Every generation needs to see that God can answer their prayers just like He answered prayers for the saints of yesteryear.
Third, God will pour out His Spirit when He does great things. God says in verse 28, “…I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh…” God’s power on the life of an individual is not just a thing for the past, but it is also for the believer of every generation. My friend, stop reading about the power of God on people of the past with a mindset that it is no longer available for today. The God who empowered those of yesterday can empower you if you will let God do great things through your life.
Fourth, God will show His wonders when He does great things. God says in verse 30, “I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth…” This generation needs to see the great wonders of God in their life. God can still do great wonders today in your life if you will have the faith, work habits and power of God on your life like those of the past.
The answer to God doing great things today is found in Jeremiah 33:3 which says, “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” It is time for you to call on God and ask Him to do mighty works in your life and generation.
