Guaranteed Victory

post-title

1 John 5:4 “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.”

The fact that we live in this evil world means that we must overcome it if we are going to live a victorious Christian life. The victory that we must have has been promised by God. God says that “whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world:…” This means that if you are saved, you already have the promise of God that you have within you the power to overcome anything that the world throws at you. To say that you cannot overcome something is to say that God lied when He declared that the believer “overcometh the world.” God says that we overcome the world through “our faith.” So, if our faith is what overcomes the world, what is our faith?

First, your faith is your salvation. In other words, you overcome the world simply by being saved. Salvation is through Jesus Christ alone; therefore, if you trust anything else to save you, you are not saved and are on the losing side of overcoming the world. Your salvation gives you the power to overcome anything that the world can try to use to defeat you.

Second, God’s Word is your faith. One reason so many struggle with overcoming the world is because they are using a perversion instead of God’s Word, the King James Bible. Perversions are not God’s Word; therefore, to trust them to help you to overcome the world is pointless because there is no power in a perversion. Only God’s Word has the power to overcome the world; therefore, you must be sure to read it, memorize it, and use it to overcome the world and sin.

Third, prayer is your faith. Prayer is the key to gaining the power of God to help you overcome whatever is trying to defeat you. You will never overcome the world on your own power. You must spend time in prayer if you want to overcome the world.

Fourth, living by faith overcomes the world. Faith has a way of getting you to take your eyes off yourself and placing them solely on God. For instance, Peter walked on water as long as he kept his eyes on Jesus, and as long as he walked by faith, the fear that initially gripped his heart was gone. However, the moment he took his eyes off Jesus is when he feared again and began to sink. You overcome the world by attempting great works of faith. Great works of faith force you to pray and to keep your eyes on God, which results in you overcoming the world.

Fifth, you overcome the world through the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit’s power is as much a part of your faith as Jesus Christ. You cannot overcome the world without being empowered by God. Yes, you can attempt great works of faith, but you will fail to keep your eyes on God if you do those works through your flesh. When you are empowered by the Holy Spirit, He will point you to Christ which will keep you from focusing on self, which results in victory.

The key to this verse is the word “overcometh.” Overcometh means to use the faith to have victory continually. One victory does not guarantee continued victory. You overcome and have victory, and overcome again and have another victory and so forth. Overcometh means you must do what gave you the victory over and over again because you will never stop battling the world until you get to Heaven. My friend, you can overcome the world IF you use your faith to overcome it.
