“Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.”
The question must be asked, who are these people who are happy? The world is in search of happiness, and yet the verse above shows us that there is a happy people. These people who are happy are the people “whose God is the LORD.” In other words, all a person has to do to be happy in life is to make sure that they keep the LORD as their God.
However, there is something that keeps this from happening. Verse 11 says, “Rid me, and deliver me from the hand of strange children, whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood:” The key to keeping the LORD as your God is to keep the wrong influences away. Notice that the psalmist says, “Rid me, and deliver me from the hand of strange children…” The “strange children” are the wrong influences. The verses after verse 11 show three areas where you must guard your influences.
First, they will keep you from rearing godly children. Verse 12 says, “That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace:” You won’t be a happy person when your children end up living in the world. Many people have lost their children to the world because they didn’t guard their influences. You can’t have worldly influences in your life and expect your children not to be affected by them. If you want your children to mature and become the adults who will bring joy to your life, you had better be careful about any worldly influence in your life that will influence your children away from the LORD.
Second, the wrong influences will affect your finances. Verse 13 shows that if you keep the wrong influences from your life that you will be able to afford “all manner of store” and your sheep will “bring forth thousands.” Finances are one of the major affects on an individual’s happiness. You won’t be happy when your finances are destroyed. My friend, you are going to have to guard your finances against strange influences that destroy your finances. The wrong influences are frivolous spending, uncontrolled debt and buying before paying bills to name a few. If you don’t get your finances under control, you will soon find that you will have to get a second and third job, which will pull you away from your spiritual responsibilities. Many people have backslid because they had to do something to pay their debts. If you keep yourself out of debt and use your money wisely, you will find happiness is the result.
The third area of wrong influences is your work ethic. Verse 14 talks about the oxen that is “strong to labour.” Be careful that you keep the right influences where you work. Don’t be around people who are lazy and constantly complain about what their employer doesn’t do for them. Many people are not satisfied in life because they don’t work hard and constantly complain about their employer. Let me encourage you to be the hardest and most productive worker where you are employed. Job security is always the result of the individual who works hard which results in inner peace and happiness.
Christian, these three areas will influence your walk with the LORD. The happiest people are the people who keep the wrong influences away from the family, finances and work practices. When these three areas are right, you will find yourself to be right with the LORD, which results in happiness.
