“So Hanameel mine uncle’s son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the LORD, and said unto me, Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin: for the right of inheritance is thine, and the redemption is thine; buy it for thyself. Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD.”
Jeremiah made an interesting statement when he said, “Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD.” God spoke to Jeremiah in prison and told him to purchase a field that his cousin would offer him. It is interesting that Jeremiah wasn’t sure this was the LORD that spoke to him or if it was just a thought that came to his mind. The only way he knew it was God’s that told him to purchase this land was when his cousin actually came and offered him the piece of land to purchase.
Have you ever been there when you thought God spoke to you to do something, but you just were not sure if it was God speaking to your heart? Anybody who has served God for any length of time has had something like this happen to them. One of the questions that people often ask me is what a dream they had means, to which I respond that I don’t know what it means. One thing I am very confident of is that I do know there are several litmus tests that can help me to know if it is God who is speaking to me. Let me share these litmus tests with you.
First, I know it’s God speaking to me if it wants me to go forward. God never asks us to stand still or to go backward. If what I feel is God telling me to do something causes me to have to do more for God, I can be assured that God is likely in this moving. God is not going to ask me to do less for Him, and if what you feel is God speaking to you causes you to do less for Him, you can be confident that what you are feeling is not of God.
Second, I know it’s God speaking to me if it does not ask me to go against His Word. God is NEVER going to move me to do something against His Word. To say that you feel God wants you to do something but it contradicts His Word is not God speaking to you, but it is your flesh moving you. God will never ask you to do something that His Word says is sin. For instance, God is not going to tell you to move to a city where there is no good church where you can get involved in serving Him. God’s moving in your life will always be in agreement with His Word.
Third, I know it’s God speaking to me if it requires me to have faith in God. God is always going to challenge your faith. God doesn’t need to speak to you if you don’t need Him. God wants you to need Him, so every time He moves you to do something, it will always take faith to do it. You can be confident that it will always take faith to do what God asks you to do. How did Abram know it was God who told him to leave his homeland to go to an unseen land? He knew it because it required faith in God. It is not of God if what you want to do doesn’t require faith.
Fourth, I know it’s God speaking to me if what was said happens. One of the clearest ways you will know that God is speaking to you is that what He says will happen begins to happen. My friend, this is often one of the last ways to determine if God is speaking to you, but when it begins to happen as God says it will, you would be wise to obey His leading in your life so that you can procure His blessings.
