“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
To be persuaded means, to be convinced to the point of confidence in something. Paul said that he was persuaded, or convinced that nothing could separate him from the “love of God.” It didn’t matter how powerful, influential, or big something was; he was confident that God loved him and that nothing could separate him from this love.
What is this love? It is God’s love for mankind. Paul was persuaded that nothing that could keep God from loving him. My friend, you can be confident in the fact that there is nothing that can keep God from loving you. God didn’t choose to love you because you did something for Him; rather, God chose to love you in your entirety. He loved your best, and He loved your worst. You, like Paul, can be persuaded that God loves you no matter what you have done.
Moreover, the love of God that is discussed in these verses is also the gift of salvation. Paul was saying that nothing can take your salvation away. These verses are teaching that once you get saved, there is nothing on this Earth or in the heavens that can remove or take away your salvation. What is it that gave Paul this confidence about God’s love?
First, God’s Word persuaded him. God promises that there is nothing that can take away your salvation. When God promised to give you eternal life, He meant eternal in every sense of the word. If God says that once you receive His loving gift of salvation that you cannot be separated from it, He means it. Just because you may feel that you have done something that you don’t deserve it doesn’t take away the fact that God’s Word promised that nothing can separate you from His love.
Second, God’s character persuaded him. God’s love is not based on man’s feelings or actions; rather, His love is based on His character. The character of God is love. God would not be God if you removed His love from Him. Part of what makes God who He is is His love. If I could put it this way; God can’t help but love you the same way you can’t help but breathe. Just like when you stop breathing you would be dead; likewise, if God stopped loving He would not be God.
Third, God’s power persuaded him. The power of God reveals that He is very capable of securing your salvation. The reason nothing can separate you from God’s love is because there is no person or thing more powerful than God. When you got saved, you were placed into God’s hand, and nothing is powerful enough to remove you from His hand.
Fourth, God’s longsuffering persuaded him. The nature of God is that His longsuffering will never stop no matter what you do. Does that give you permission to do whatever you want to do? Absolutely not! What most people don’t understand is that love convicts those who do wrong. The love of God towards His children convicts them because they know they are undeserving of it. Likewise, the love of God gives greater security to the believer when they do right. It is God’s longsuffering that gives you this confidence.
Always remember that no matter what you do, you can be persuaded that God loves you.
