In the spirit

post-title

Revelation 4:2 “And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.”

Believers are often looking to get their spirit involved. You will often hear people talk about a great spirit in the church services, which means they are talking about the feeling of emotion that something brought in the services. I would hate to think that church is the only time I can be in the spirit. The fact is that you can be in the spirit at any time if you do what God commands you to do.

John was not in church when he was in the spirit. In fact, he was exiled on the isle of Patmos. He was on a prisoner’s island to die. There was no music playing for him to be in the spirit. There was nothing that many modern-day churches do to create a great spirit for John to use to put him in the spirit, but we find that he was in the spirit.

Now, I want you to notice that the word “spirit” uses a little “s” and not a capital “S.” In other words, this verse is talking about John’s spirit and not the Holy Spirit. You will find that three verses after John was in the spirit that the Holy Spirit is talked about, but what was it that put John “in the spirit?” One word put him “in the spirit,” and that word is obedience. In other words, after he obeyed is when he was in the spirit. It was after he obeyed that the emotions came. It was after he obeyed that he felt in the spirit. It was obedience that brought his spirit to the point where the Holy Spirit could move.

Your spirit is critical to your ability to serve the LORD successfully; however, too many want to manufacture a spirit, but they get the wrong spirit. You can't conjure a spirit and expect the Holy Spirit to show up. You obey God’s Word by faith to get the Holy Spirit to help your spirit. It is after you do things according to God’s Word that you have the feeling or emotion that you are in the spirit.

Let me explain this truth further. You often have to do by duty what you are supposed to do before you have a feeling in your spirit. For instance, there are many times you won’t feel like going to church, but by duty you go to church, and once you obey, you find that you are in the spirit in church. There are many times that I don't feel like going soul winning, but once I get going is when my spirit feels good about obeying the LORD. There will be many times when you don't feel like reading the Scriptures, but once you start reading the Scriptures is when your spirit is moved by the Holy Spirit and you receive truths from God’s Word. There are many times when you don't feel like praying, but by duty you pray, and you find that you are in the spirit as you pray, and the Holy Spirit helps you. It is always after obeying by duty that you find yourself in the spirit.

Why must we do things by duty to be in the spirit? The reason is because we are in a battle between our flesh and yielding to the Holy Spirit. When you by duty do right, you crucify your flesh, and the action of right stirs the Holy Spirit inside of you, resulting in you being in the spirit. Paul told Timothy in 2 Timothy 1:6, “Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.” Paul was saying to obey by duty, and that would stir the Spirit of God, which results in you being in the spirit. My friend, stop waiting to be in the spirit and just obey, and you will find that your obedience will put you in the spirit.
