In This City
1 Samuel 9:6
“And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honourable man; all that he saith cometh surely to pass: now let us go thither; peradventure he can shew us our way that we should go.”
Some of the livestock of Saul’s father had been lost, and Saul was commissioned to go find them. When several days had passed without finding the livestock, Saul determined to go back home because he was afraid his father would be concerned for their safety. However, the servant of Saul suggested that they go find the man of God. He said, “Behold now, there is in this city a man of God…”
The statement this servant made is the need for every city. He said that in this city is a man of God. Every city needs a man of God. Every city needs a man who can get in touch with God to guide the people towards God. There were several characteristics this servant pointed out about the man of God that stood out to him.
First, the man of God was honorable. In other words, every city needs men who are moral and ethical in all they do. Men of God should be men who are morally pure. Men ought to carry themselves in such a manner that no lady should feel uncomfortable around them. We live in a society where men are often immoral. Men should be known to always be proper around the ladies.
Moreover, men should be honorable in how they conduct business. No man should be unethical in his business dealings. The thing that stood out to this servant was that Samuel always did the right thing in his dealings. No man should ever be known to be shady in his dealings. You should always do your best to be right in your business dealings. If something you did didn’t turn out right, do the ethical thing to make sure it is right. Honorable men will be ethical in their business dealings and in how they conduct themselves with others.
Second, everything the man of God said came to pass. Two things can be taken from this statement. First, every man should be a person who knows what God’s Word says. The reason everything Samuel said came to pass was because he spoke God’s Word. You will never be the man you should be if you don’t spend time in God’s Word. God’s Word gives you the insight as to what should be done.
Moreover, a man should be a person of their word. The verse above says, “…all that he saith cometh surely to pass…” When men say they are going to do something, they should follow through on their word. Honorable men do everything in their power to be sure they do what they say they will do. It should never be said about any man that he doesn’t keep his word. An honorable man will honor his word at all costs.
Third, a man of God can show the way to walk in life. Men of God are wise men who are discerning of God’s ways. The greatest need for this day are men who are wise enough to spend time with God so they’ll know how to show others how to walk in life. A man of God is one who invests his life in helping others to live right.
Every city needs a man of God. You may not be a preacher, but you can still be a man of God “in your city.” Your city is your home and workplace where God has placed you. In these areas it should be known that there is a man of God present because you are God’s representative in that place.
