Inside the Walls
“So shall I keep thy law continually for ever and ever. And I will walk at liberty: for I seek thy precepts.”
There is nothing like a wall that keeps you from seeing something on the other side. Oftentimes walls are considered a hindrance, but in reality those walls you build around your house are what keeps you from seeing things you should not see, and from going to places you should not go.
We live in times when many want to tear down the walls of God’s laws and say that we are under grace; therefore, we don’t have to obey the laws God gave His children. This is true when it comes to ceremonial laws, but it is not true when it comes to the life God commands the believer to live. Several benefits are revealed in Psalm 119 for the believer who chooses to live within the walls of God’s laws.
First, inside the walls of God’s commandments is mercy. In verse 41, you will find that God’s mercy is found within the commandments of God’s law. The believer never finds the mercy of God outside of His laws. The believer who lives in sin finds God’s mercy the moment they step within the walls of God’s precepts. Mercy is never found outside of God’s laws.
Second, inside the walls of God’s commandments are answers. Verse 42 says, “So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me: for I trust in thy word.” You will only find God’s answers for life when you live within the walls of His commandments. If you need some answers for your life, you would be wise to do right because God’s answers are found when you live within the commandments of God’s Word.
Third, inside the walls of God’s commandments is liberty. The verse above shows the liberty the believer finds by keeping God’s commandments. The world’s lifestyle gives a false security of freedom, but you will soon find the bondage it puts you in. My friend, you are never free when you live outside of the walls of God’s commandments. God’s grace doesn’t remove the consequences of sin’s lifestyle. Yes, His grace saves you from sin, but sin still has consequences. Liberty will only be experienced by living within the walls of God’s commandments.
Fourth, inside the walls of God’s commandments is delight. You will find the joy you seek in life when you live within the walls of God’s commandments. Verse 47 shows that delight is found in God’s commandments. Delight is never found outside of His commandments, but on the inside of the walls of God’s commandments. Heartache and regret are the only things you will find outside of God’s commandments.
Fifth, confidence is found inside the walls of God’s commandments. Verse 48 shows the confidence the believer discovers when they do right. If you want the confidence to do the LORD’s work, you must live according to the precepts of God’s Word.
Sixth, inside the walls of God’s commandments is hope. Verse 49 says, “Remember the word unto thy servant, upon which thou hast caused me to hope.” God’s Word always gives hope. You will never have the motivation to continue serving God by living outside of God’s commandments. God’s Word gives the believer hope that doing right eventually pays. The only thing you must do to find the hope to continue is to spend time in God’s Word, and you will find the encouragement you need to continue.
