Invited for Supper
“And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.”
One of my favorite meals as a child was supper. My mother was a great cook, and the best meal she prepared was supper. When she called my brother and me in from playing, she didn’t have to scold us to come to eat because it was supper time. My wife is also a great cook who makes great meals, and she never has to drag me in to eat when it is suppertime.
The Scriptures teach that the LORD is preparing a “great supper.” The supper that is being prepared is the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. This supper will happen after the saints of God are raptured into Heaven and we become the bride of Christ. God has been preparing for this supper since before the world began. This supper is going to be the greatest suppers of all time; you won’t want to miss it.
However, God doesn’t want you to come to supper alone. God wants you to invite as many as you can to come to the supper with you. The supper that is being prepared is for every person who accepts Christ as their Saviour. God wants this supper to be filled with guests. When you look at how the LORD tells us to invite people to this great supper, you see how urgent the believer is to be in their soul winning. Let me show you how the LORD wants you to invite.
First, God wants you to bid people to come to supper. Verse 17 says, “And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.” To bid people to supper means to invite with earnest. You will never be a successful soul winner if you are not earnest in your presentation of the Gospel. If you believed that the Gospel is as great as the LORD believes it is, and if you believe that the supper will be as great as the LORD knows it will be, you will not find it hard to bid or invite people in an earnest fashion.
Second, God wants you to bid people in the “streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind” to come to the supper. My friend, God knows that His Gospel can take those who are spiritually poor and make them spiritually rich. He knows that those who have been maimed and blinded by sin can be made whole by the Gospel. God doesn’t care how “bad” a person may be because He knows His Gospel is powerful enough to change the condition of a person.
Third, God wants you to compel people to come to His supper. To compel someone to come means to urge or constrain people to come. In other words, you mustn’t be so quick to give up on someone who at first seems they don’t want to get saved. If you believed that the supper that the LORD is preparing for His bride was as great as He knows it is, it would never bother you to compel someone to get saved. The only reason people don’t compel others to get saved is because they don’t believe the great supper the LORD is preparing is great.
Let me ask you; are you bidding people to come to the great supper? My friend, don’t be so lazy and indifferent that you don’t care about others not coming to the great supper. Let me challenge you to bid and compel people to come to this great supper that the LORD is preparing for all who will come.
