It Came to Pass
“Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?”
I was recently talking to a pastor friend of mine who made the statement that the old guard seems to have passed away. As we discussed some of the battles, he said that it is our time to step up and take the lead in the fight. The hardest thing that this pastor friend and I had to swallow was that our time has come to pass. Those who paved the way before us are gone, and it has come to pass for our generation to pass the truths of God’s Word to the next generation.
I can remember my pastor for many years often saying that one day he would pass off the scene and that there needs to be another generation to pick up the mantle and fight for truth. Though everyone who heard him make this statement knew that what he said would happen, it just seemed as if he would live forever. However, life happened to him as it happens to all, and he stepped onto the shores of Heaven leaving us the mantle to pick up and carry for the next generation.
The verse above says, “Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass…” Joshua filled his roles after Moses went to Heaven, but it came to pass that someone needed to take fill his place when he was gone. Israel found themselves in a desperate situation of needing a leader to step up and lead. As is very evident throughout the Book of Judges, it seemed that nobody stepped up which led to the people doing what they thought was right in their own eyes. The heartache and sin that happened because nobody stepped up when it came to pass caused many to have to suffer the consequences of sin.
My friend, it has come to pass when someone needs to see the need for their generation and stepping up to fill it. We live in times when many seem to be molding their spiritual life after the ways of the world. It seems as if many have resigned to the fact that the great spiritual leaders will no longer be something we will see again. It is time that you realize that God has allowed you to live for such a time like we are facing today. If you don’t step up and do your part, who is it who will stand for the LORD?
Let me remind you that you can only ride on the coattails of your leaders for so long until the LORD brings them to Heaven. While your leaders are alive, you had better glean everything from them that you can because they will eventually go the way of life and the mantle will fall into your lap. Every great leader has gone the way of life, and the hope of the next generation was what people like you did after their leader was gone. It is sad that it came to pass after Joshua’s death that there was no person to stand in the gap for their nation. Likewise, it is sad that if the modern spiritual leaders were to die today that many would be looking for someone to step up.
My friend, it has come to pass for you, and it is time that you step up and do something with your life. Stop waiting for someone else to step up and step up yourself. All it takes for the next generation not to know the works of the LORD is for this generation to do nothing when life comes to pass. Don’t be negligent in your duty. It is time that you do your part in passing to the next generation what the previous generation has handed to you.
