“Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.”
We often hear that nothing is impossible with God, which is true. When the Christian is in need of a miracle, they often hold onto the truth that God can help them through whatever they are facing. It is encouraging and challenging for the Christian to know that with God nothing shall be impossible.
However, there are two times the Scriptures state that something is impossible for God to do. Does that mean that the verse which says that all things are possible with God is not true? Absolutely not! In fact, for these two things to be impossible for God reinforces the fact that all things are possible with God. Let me show you what these two things are that are impossible for God and how they are applicable to your life.
First, it was impossible for Jesus to stay dead. The verse above says, “Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.” As much as death tried to hold Jesus in the grave, death itself was not powerful enough to hold Him down “because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.”
Second, it is impossible for God to lie. Titus 1:2 says, “In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;” God cannot lie because He is truth. John 14:6 reminds us, “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life…” If God is truth, there is no way He can lie. This truth that God cannot lie can certainly bring joy to the heart of the Christian. So, how do the things that are impossible with God help you today?
First, it is a reminder that if death cannot hold Jesus down, there is nothing you face that is too great for Him to handle. When you realize that man has failed in his attempt to wipe out death, you quickly realize that Jesus Christ is an all-powerful God. My friend, whatever you face today, you can have the confidence that God is powerful enough to handle your problems. The impossibility of death to hold Christ in the grave should be the anchor that the Christian holds onto to give courage that He can help them in every situation.
Second, the fact that God cannot lie should bring hope to the heart of every Christian that God’s promises are eternally true. Every time you are going through difficult times and wonder if God is still with you, the fact that He cannot lie makes the promise that He will never leave you the source that should bring confidence to your soul. You may be facing daunting situations in your life, but you can hold onto every promise in God’s Word because He cannot lie. Whatever promise you find in God’s Word is still true today because He cannot lie.
Christian, it is good that two things are impossible for God. The impossibility of what God cannot do is what gives Him the power that all things are possible with Him. My friend, don’t let the voices of doubt that come to mind during difficult times cause you to lose faith in God. Because eternal death and lying are impossible for God means that His truth is eternal and His power is limitless. Let this be your encouragement the next time you face the daunting trials.
