Matthew 27:24 “When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.”
There is no price tag that you can put on building a good name. Proverbs 22:1 says, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.” It takes years to build a good name. The effort and labor it takes to build a name is of greater wealth than money could ever afford. A good name is someone’s life. Your name is key to your ability to rise in position and to be able to influence others greatly.
However, all it takes for a good name to be destroyed is for one person to spread false accusation about them. What is worse are those who spread the false accusation or sit idly by to watch what will happen to the person being accused as if it is a game. My friend, it is not a game. It is not worth sitting idly by while people malign someone.
Just because people say something does not make it true. Jesus was falsely accused by the mob, and Pilate did nothing about it. Yes, he said that Jesus was an innocent man, but he did nothing to protect Jesus’ name. The bad part about Pilate not taking a stand against the accusation is that he was allowing an innocent man to die. Always remember that when you listen to an accusation and spread it that you are playing with someone’s life. The name of an individual is their life. When you look at the accusations that were spread about Christ, you will find three groups of people who allowed this accusation to continue.
The first group was the group that hurled the accusations at Christ. These accusers didn't care that their lies were destroying a name because their hatred for Christ was so great that they didn't care about the evil they were perpetrating. You will always find out that those who accuse people often have a deep hatred for that person. It doesn't matter if it is true or false; it is their hatred for that individual that causes them to hurl the accusations and not justice.
The second group of people are those who sit idly by as if it is a game. It says in Matthew 27:36, “And sitting down they watched him there;” This group of people sat and watched the accusations as entertainment. Whenever someone is being accused, you will always find those who could care less that a name is at stake; they enjoy the entertainment of the accusations more than they care about justice.
The third group of people are those like Pilate who know the truth, but they won't take a stand for the truth because of their fear of being clumped in with the person who is being attacked by the mob. One of the greatest frustrations when being accused are those who know the truth but won’t say anything because they “just don't want to get involved.” My friend, if it were your name and life at stake, you would want others who know the truth to get involved. You are no different from the rumormonger when you sit idly by and let lies about an individual continue without saying anything.
Remember that you are dealing with someone’s life when rumors are spread. All it takes for lies to continue is for one person who knows the truth to sit idly by without taking a stand. You shouldn’t let someone’s name be dragged through the mud because you don't want to get involved. Always remember that it may be you the next time.
