Joseph Faith

Matthew 1:20 “But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.”

One of my favorite characters in the Scriptures is Joseph, the stepfather of our Saviour. Joseph, in my estimation, is one of the most overlooked heroes of the faith and yet may be one of the greatest Christians you will read about. When you put yourself into his shoes and try to take out the knowledge of what we know today, you can easily see the greatness of this man.

What is the greatness of Joseph? His faith in God is what made him great. Think with me just a bit. The lady he was engaged to was found out to be pregnant, and he knows that he didn't get her pregnant. She then gives the “excuse" that the Holy Ghost came upon her and placed the seed of the Saviour in her. This is easily an insult to injury, but his character caused him to pause and wait on what to do next, and the rest is history as the Lord appeared to him in a dream and told him everything that he had heard was true. However, it took faith to believe all of this. There are five characteristics of Joseph’s faith that I would like to point out to you that every believer needs to have in their life.

First, Joseph’s faith caused him to silence fear. The Lord told Joseph to “fear not.” Joseph’s ability to silence the voice of fear is what allowed him to act on faith. You will never do much for God if you let the voices of fear to dictate your moves in life. Faith must be the directive you follow, even when fear screams that you can't do it.

Second, Joseph’s faith caused him to believe in innocence. You cannot help people if you always believe in their guilt. Faith must believe in people and that God can use them. It is no wonder so many people are not used by God when they believe every rumor about people. You must believe in people if you want faith to guide your life.

Third, Joseph’s faith caused him to believe in the miraculous. My friend, the conception of Jesus was a miracle, and Joseph believed it. I am sure there were many who thought Joseph was crazy, but he believed that His God was powerful enough to place the seed of the Saviour in Mary.

Fourth, Joseph’s faith caused him to believe in God’s ability to save. Everything that Joseph was told in the dream was future tense. He was told that Jesus “shall save his people from their sins.” Oh, the need for people to have the faith that God can still save sinners today! God will never use you mightily if you don't have the faith that He can save sinners. Those who have been used mightily by God were those who had a faith that God could save every person.

Fifth, Joseph’s faith moved him to action. Joseph did what he was told to do, and he obeyed because of his faith. True faith always results in action. You can say you believe in something, but action in what you believe shows your faith. If there is no action to obey God’s command of faith, there is no faith.

Let me ask you, does your faith resemble Joseph’s? Everyone who lives a life of faith and experiences great miracles by God’s hand are people whose faith has the same characteristics of Joseph. Ask God to help you in those areas where your faith lacks. A people of faith is a great need in our day. Be that person of faith in your world.
